Choosing between Crete and Rhodes isn’t really about which island is better—it’s about which one fits the kind of trip you’re dreaming of right now.

Both are rich in history, blessed with beautiful beaches, and well set up for visitors, yet the experience they offer can feel surprisingly different once you’re there. One is vast and wonderfully varied, the other more compact and neatly layered with centuries of stories.

Crete invites you to slow down and explore deeply, from dramatic gorges and mountain villages to long beaches and vibrant cities. Rhodes, on the other hand, charms with its medieval towns, well-preserved landmarks, and an easy rhythm that makes island-hopping days feel effortless.

Both are top destinations for couples and families. Perfect for those chasing culture, food, or relaxation. This guide looks beyond first impressions to help you decide which island truly matches your travel style—and which one should wait for your next Greek escape.

Crete or Rhodes: Consider the location

In complete contrast, the island of Rhodes is about eight times smaller than Crete and has just one airport which is 14 km southwest of Rhodes Town.

Mandraki is the island’s port and is also a sizeable marina, popular with the owners of snazzy yachts from all over Europe.

Suggested length of your stay

If you are looking for an island that can be enjoyed for a long weekend or midweek break of less than a week, Rhodes is ideal. 

Because of its much larger physical size, Crete takes longer to explore, and at least one week is needed – although evenlonger is preferable if you plan to delve into its rich archaeological treasures which tell the story of the Minoan civilization that inhabited Crete and other islands during the Bronze Age, about 3,500 years ago. 

Ease of getting around

The easiest way to get around both islands is to hire a car, but it is fun to hire a boat to make an excursion too.

Crete has a good bus network but because of the size of the island, the journey times can often be too long (especially for day trips) however the landscapes are worth the experience.

In Rhodes, there is a good bus service between the towns and there are also several tours of Rhodes Town available.

If you plan to stay in and around the main town, it is easy to reach most landmarks in town on foot. 

Beaches and coastline

Crete has a very long and varied coastline with pretty fishing villages and numerous deserted coves. 

Crete also has two of the most stunning beaches in the whole of Greece –Balos, and Elafonisi.

Balos with its clear lagoon and the nearby islet of Gramvousa is a truly stunning destination, while Elafonisi Beach has gorgeous powder-pinkish sand.

Vai is another popular beach that is fringed by date palms with an ancient monastery open to visitors close by.

Almost all of the coastline of Rhodes is made of gorgeous beaches. Many are sandy with calm, clear waters — with Pefkos being the best and most popular of all. 

On the South coast of the island, the beach of Prasonisi is simply perfect for kite surfing.   

Towns and villages

Both islands have traditional towns and villages to discover where time seems to almost stand still. In Crete, the town of Chania has a beautiful Venetian harbor, an Egyptian lighthouse, and numerous alleyways.

Lindos is the second town and is built on and around a huge rock and is dominated by its castle. Faliraki is another popular place to discover, it was once a fishing village but today is a popular resort.

There are plenty of Greek dishes you can enjoy in both Crete and Rhodes! Delicious pastries and cups of Greek coffee can be enjoyed throughout the day – or a Frappé which is a chilled coffee served with plenty of ice.

Main dishes include village-style salads (xoriatiki), meat, and fish cooked over charcoal, and oven-baked dishes such as moussaka or gemista (check this guide to Cretan food for more details).

The best way to enjoy a variety of different dishes is to order a mezé which is like a tasting menu to share and consists of more than a dozen plates. 

Crete has plenty of island specialties for visitors. 

Dakos is a large barley rusk that originated on the island and is dipped in olive oil and then topped with chopped tomatoes, capers, and crumbled feta.

Many villages make their cheeses and kaltsounia is a local cheese or spinach pie.

There are many meat specialties to sample, including cold slices of smoked pork, lamb dishes, and even fried snails (chochlioi boubouristi) to sample as well as vegetable dishes and ones made with pulses.

Crete produces wines and raki (or tsikoudia) which is the local spirit made from grapes but not aniseed.

In Rhodes, there are plenty of delicious dishes to sample including several made with broad beans and horse beans, plenty of fresh fish and seafood, meat cooked over charcoal or in casseroles, and many kinds of cheese. 

Flower blossom honey, olive oil, and locally grown thyme are often featured in many dishes. There are also plenty of Greek beers and wines to enjoy as well as ouzo, raki, and tsipouro. 

Crete or Rhodes: Which is best for island hopping?

Island hopping by boat is a popular way to explore several islands in one holiday and Crete is the perfect location for those planning to island hop to Santorini (two hours by boat) Paros, and Naxos (3.5 hours by boat). 

If you fancy island hopping from Rhodes, the delightful island of Symi is just a few hours by boat and is famous for its gorgeous harbor which is surrounded by elegant mansions and people selling natural sea sponges. 

The most easternmost Greek island, Kastellorizo lies just a few kilometers from the Turkish mainland. It is a tiny island and consists of one small town with Venetian mansions and no beach!

It is well worth paying a local fisherman to take you to see the Blue Grotto and the famous islet of Ro. Patmos, Tilos, and Nisyros are other islands within easy reach of Rhodes.

Both islands make great holiday destinations and each has its character, perhaps the ideal solution is to visit one this year and the other next year!

Peaceful asummer destination 

The island of Thassos is a relatively unknown holiday destination among Europeans. However, it has always been among the first choices for Balkans and Northern Greece tourists. After all, it is one of the northernmost islands of the Aegean.

Since Thassos is cut off and isolated from the rest of the Aegean, there is no direct ferry connection with other Greek islands.

And because most visitors to Greece come by plane, they mostly prefer to land in Athens and start hopping from island to island. If only they knew. 

For those reasons, Thassos has remained a peaceful and relaxing summer destination. Crowds form very rarely, in a few places, and only during high season. But you would not need to worry about those at all.

All you must do is sit back and embrace the island’s majesty. And in the meantime, view unique sights that will leave you breathless. 

On a side note, you may have heard of Thasos with one letter “s”. Although the official name is Thassos with double “s”, both variations point to the same place.

Greeks prefer to use double “s” while visitors keep it simple with one “s”. In any case, one thing is for sure: Thassos deserves more attention than it has so far.

Giola, a natural pool by the sea

As legend says, one spectacular attraction in Southern Thassos is called Giola, or the Aphrodite Tear. It is about a one-of-its-kind natural pool carved into the rock by the sea. Featured in travel and nature magazines, Giola is a sight that you will not stop admiring. 

Hands down, it is the most instagrammable spot in Thassos. This natural pool is about fifteen meters in diameter and no more than three meters deep. And the best part is that you can swim at any time of the day. No matter how windy or large the waves are, Giola’s waters are always quiet. 

You can even jump from eight meters in height to the pool’s center to get a sense of adventure. If that sounds scary, you can jump from as low as you feel comfortable and build your way up. In any case, you will want to return after a few jumps in no time. 

It is easy and inexpensive to reach Thassos by car

If you have or rent a car, Thassos is one of the Greek islands with the fastest access from the mainland.

The crossing takes as little as twenty-five minutes from the port of Keramoti to Limenas, the island’s historical capital. And in summer, there are ferries every half an hour, sometimes even every 20 minutes.

It is no coincidence that locals in Northern Greece often prefer Thassos for a quick weekend getaway. All they have to do is pack up, load the car, and off they go.

And having a vehicle while in Thassos makes for a much grander experience of what the island can offer.

But Greeks are not the only visitors to Thassos. Since Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU, the island has seen an influx of visitors from those two countries, especially Romanians.

Within five hours, you can be from Sofia airport to a beach in Thassos. 

And because the distance from the mainland is small, the cost of bringing your car to the island is also considerably low. In other words, traveling in your car will not hurt your wallet while granting you a free pass to every corner of the island.

Breathtaking mountains 

Thassos is one of the greenest islands in Greece. Wherever your head turns, you will witness either an endless sight of blue or a mesmerizing deep green. Water and nature come together in harmony to spoil you with spectacular sites.

Whether you prefer the coolness of the mountain villages or the fresh Aegean breeze in the fishing settlements, one thing is sure: Nature here is at its best. And the moment you think you have seen it all, a wonder awaits you in the next corner. 

If you are a hiker or love mountain biking, Thassos is the place to be. With hundreds of designated and well-maintained tracks, you will love exploring the island’s interior.

You can even drive to the highest peak, at 1204 meters, and be rewarded with a view similar to no other.

The history of Thassos dates back millennia 

Like every corner of Greece, Thassos carries a rich and mesmerizing history. The first settlement on the island dates as far back as the Neolithic age, more than 6 thousand years ago. Since then, the island has become a significant center in the region.

Learn how the Phoenicians colonized the island for its gold, how Thassians rebelled against the mighty city-state of Athens, or how marble from the island found its way to Roman palaces. At any point in time, Thassos has a story to tell. 

And there is no better way to learn about it than visiting the many museums on the island. Above all, the Archaeological Museum of Thassos stands out for its modernity, unique artifacts, and many awards. 

If you prefer to wander around archaeological sites, you have an extra reason to visit Thassos. The capital, Limenas, and Alykes Beach are home to well-preserved archaeological monuments and locations that will transport you back in time. Not to mention the historical settlements in the mountains.

Perhaps the most important reason to visit Thassos is no other than its beaches. The island has more sandy beaches than it has villages. Let alone the hundreds of hidden enclaves and pebble beaches accessible only by sea. 

Picture a postcard-like beach. Take out the palm trees and replace them with fig and olive trees instead. There you go! You have just thought of a beach in Thassos. 

You will often struggle to choose which beach to visit first. Would it be the Makryammos with its shallow waters, Marble Beach with its lovely scenery, or La Skala with its luxury?

It was not long ago that Thassians produced most of what they consumed. Although this has changed with the rise of tourism, almost every household keeps a garden.

Taste a Greek salad with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions, and see for yourself. And do not forget the Thassos olives and virgin olive oil. After all, the island is full of such trees, and since the harvest period is in winter, almost every household still produces its olive oil.

Tucked away in the Cyclades just off the coast of Paros, Antiparos is a compact island that exudes authenticity. With just 24 hours, you can get a solid taste of its highlights — from landmarks and natural wonders to delicious food and crystalline waters.

This itinerary also offers alternative options for those seeking a bit more adventure or tranquility.

Morning: Wake Up in Chora
Coffee, Castles, and Cycladic Calm

Start your day in Antiparos Town (Chora), the island’s small but lively main village. Wake up slowly with a traditional Greek breakfast in the town’s central square (plateia), setting the tone for a picture-perfect day.

Cafés like Papagalos or Boogaloo serve juices, pastries, and Greek coffee, all great to fuel your morning.

After breakfast, stroll through the town’s narrow paths and explore the Venetian Castle (Kastro). Built in the 15th century by the Venetians, the Kastro is more of a lived-in neighborhood than a standalone ruin. Its square layout, low stone Medieval houses, and walls.

Alternative Morning Activity:
If you’re more of a nature lover than a history buff, skip the Kastro and take a short walk to Psaraliki Beach, just south of town. The place is perfect for a peaceful early morning dip or a paddleboard session.

Late Morning
Antiparos Cave

A short 10-minute drive or scooter ride from town brings you to the Cave of Antiparos, one of the most impressive natural landmarks in the Cyclades.

Descend about 85 meters and marvel at the stalactites and stalagmites, some of which are among the oldest in Europe. Inscriptions on the cave walls from centuries past (including one from King Otto of Greece in 1840) add a layer of history.

Allow at least 45 minutes to fully explore the cave and take in the silence, cool air, and eerie beauty that have inspired poets and travelers for centuries.

Pro tip: The descent includes 411 steps, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a light jacket — it’s cool underground even in summer.

Alternative:
Prefer open skies and tranquil landscapes? Hike to Faneromeni Church, a remote chapel on the southwestern tip of Antiparos. The walk or drive there offers panoramic sea views, and the spot itself is peaceful and quiet. Bring water, sun protection, and your camera — it’s a favorite among photographers for its contrast of white architecture against the blue sea.

Midday
Soros Beach

After your underground exploration, it’s time to relax by the sea. Head to Soros Beach, about 15 minutes away, known for its turquoise water and wide shoreline.

For lunch, the beachside taverna is a favorite, offering locally sourced seafood, grilled vegetables, and Cycladic specialties.

Don’t miss these local treats:

Gouna (Sun-dried Mackerel): Fish that’s salted and sun-dried before being grilled, especially common on islands like Paros and Antiparos. It’s smoky, flavorful, and often served with a squeeze of lemon… A true Cycladic specialty.

Revithada (Baked Chickpeas): Slow-cooked chickpeas with onions, olive oil, and herbs. Though famously associated with Sifnos, this dish is common across the Cyclades, including Antiparos. It’s hearty and often baked overnight in wood ovens.

Kopanisti Cheese Spread: A spicy, fermented cheese typically from Mykonos and Tinos, but often found throughout the islands and served with warm bread or rusks.

Octopus in Vinegar: A seaside favorite, especially on Antiparos, where fresh seafood is abundant. The octopus is tenderized, grilled or boiled, then marinated in vinegar and olive oil. Served cold — refreshing and flavorful.

Alternative Beach Lunch: If Soros feels a bit too busy, try Apantima Beach, which has a quieter vibe.

Afternoon
Boat Trip to Despotiko & Sea Caves

In the afternoon, it’s time for a mini-adventure. From the small port of Agios Georgios, about 15 minutes south by road, hop on a boat for a half-day excursion to Despotiko Island. This uninhabited island is an active archaeological site and home to the Sanctuary of Apollo, a significant discovery that is still being excavated.

While on Despotiko, you can walk among the ancient ruins with the sea as your backdrop. Most boat trips also include swimming stops or a visit to the sea caves of Antiparos, where underwater visibility make for unforgettable snorkeling.

Don’t Miss: Jumping into the blue caves, a highlight of many guided boat trips, where the water glows from the light filtering through narrow cave openings.

Alternative: Prefer to stay dry? Spend the afternoon at Agios Georgios Beach instead. With fewer crowds and panoramic views of Despotiko, it’s ideal for a swim followed by coffee or dessert at a seaside taverna like Captain Pipinos.

Evening
Golden Hour at Sifneiko and Dinner

No visit to Antiparos is complete without watching the sunset at Sifneiko Beach, often called Sunset Beach by locals. Located just a short walk from Chora, it offers a front-row seat to the Aegean’s fiery evening colors. Grab a cocktail at the nearby Sifneiko Café-Bar and watch as the sun melts into the sea.

As night falls, head back into Chora for a laid-back yet delicious dinner.

Suggested restaurants include Pavlo’s, Taverna Yorgis, Kalokeri, or Lollo’s Pizzeria (for a break from Greek food).

End your evening with a stroll down the cobbled pedestrian streets, perhaps stopping at an ice cream shop or cocktail bar like Tabula Rasa for one last indulgence.

  The best way to explore the island in one day is by rental scooter, e-bike, or small car. Rentals are available in Chora and near the port.

• What to bring
  Swimwear, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, a bottle of water, and a light jacket for the cave or boat ride.

• Boat tours
  Book in advance during high season. Most Despotiko tours leave around 1–2 p.m. and return by early evening. Morning tours are also available.

• Local souvenirs
  Don’t forget to check out handmade ceramics, jewelry, and natural beauty products from local shops before you leave. My favorite spot? Mariliza Shop!

Even with just one day, Antiparos manages to make a lasting impression. Its sincere island hospitality make it feel worlds away from the bustle of larger Greek Islands.

Antiparos, a serene island in the Cyclades, offers some of the most breathtaking sunsets in Greece. You can seek a quiet beach setting, a lonely cliff far from the Chora (Antiparos Town), or a pretty café with panoramic sea views.

1. Sifneiko Beach (Sunset Beach)

Located just a short walk from Antiparos Town, Sifneiko Beach, aptly nicknamed “Sunset Beach,” is a great place to see the sunset because of the unobstructed views of the sun setting over the Aegean.

This was our favorite sunset view point when we visited the island. Sifneiko beach faces the west, which makes it ideal for sunset watchers.

You can enjoy the sunset from the sandy shore or from the nearby Sifneiko Café. Here, you will find tables tight by the sea for you to photograph the sunset as you enjoy a cold beer, some music, and a relaxed atmosphere.

2. Antiparos Town Waterfront

The waterfront promenade of Antiparos, right next to the port, is a great setting to watch the sunset. As the sun descends, it casts a golden hue over the harbor, illuminating the moored boats and traditional whitewashed buildings.

You can sit at one of the benches in the area, or pick a café along the the promenade to have a drink or even early dinner as you see the sun going down. You will certainly enjoy taking in the view. from this spot.

3. Agios Georgios

Situated on the southern tip of Antiparos, Agios Georgios is a tiny village with a gorgeous beach right opposite the archaeological site on Despotiko Island.

The area, featuring a few fish tavernas on the waterfront, offers a peaceful environment to experience the sunset. From here, you can see the sun set behind the neighboring Despotiko, creating a picturesque scene of silhouetted islands against the sky.

The area is never really crowded, which offers a more intimate and romantic experience… so this is certainly the place couples pick to watch the sunset in Antiparos.​

4. Boat Excursion

For a unique perspective, consider taking a boat excursion around Antiparos during the late afternoon. These trips often culminate with a sunset view from the sea, offering a panoramic vista of the island bathed in the warm glow of dusk.

Most of these tours also include swimming (or observation) stops at nearby beaches or coves. Don;t forget to pack your camera equipment and a cover up as it tends to get chilly at sea once the sun has set.

Most boat tours in the area depart from Agios Giorgos Beach, so it’s a good idea to have dinner at a waterfron fish restaurant in Agios Giorgos after the boat experience.

Tips for Enjoying Antiparos Sunsets

• Arrive early
  Although the island is not really overcrowded in summer, popular spots like Sifneiko Beach can get busy during peak season. Arriving early ensures a good viewing spot.​

• Bring essentials
  Bring a light jacket or a cover up, as evenings can be cool. Don’t forget your phone (and a power bank if necessary) or your camera to capture the stunning views.​

• Respect nature
  While enjoying the sunset, remember to keep the environment clean and respect local customs.​

How to Get to Hydra by Plane

Yes, I have already mentioned that you can’t fly directly to Hydra—the island doesn’t have an airport, which is part of its charm. However, you can fly to Athens International, reach Piraeus Port and then board a fast ferry to Hydra. Take a look:

Closest Airport:

• Athens International Airport (ATH) is your gateway.
• From there, you’ll transfer to Piraeus Port and take a ferry.

Tip: If you’re flying into Athens, you can be in Hydra in just a few hours total.

How to Get to Hydra by Ferry

Ferries are the only way to reach Hydra, and they’re fast and frequent—especially from Athens.

From Athens (Piraeus Port)

• High-speed hydrofoils depart multiple times per day.
• Ferry duration: 1.5–2 hours.
• Operators: Blue Star Ferries, Alpha Lines, Hellenic Seaways.

Important: Hydra has no car ferries—only passenger ferries can dock.

Getting to Hydra from Athens

This is one of the easiest island trips from Athens. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Get to Piraeus Port

• From Athens city center: take the green metro Line 1 directly to Piraeus (approx. 25–30 minutes).
• From Athens Airport: take the X96 express bus to Piraeus (approx. 60–90 minutes).

Step 2: Ferry to Hydra

• Catch a hydrofoil or catamaran to Hydra.
• Book in advance during weekends or summer months.
• Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours.

• Multiple ferries daily (approx. 30–45 minutes)
• Great for island-hopping.

From Aegina or Agistri

• Less frequent, may require transfer at Poros.

From Cyclades, Crete, or Dodecanese

• No direct ferries. You’ll need to connect through Piraeus.

How to Move Around Hydra

Hydra is car-free, and that’s what makes it magical. There are no roads for vehicles, and transportation is completely old-school in the best way.

1. On Foot

• The main town and most attractions are easily walkable.
• Coastal paths connect beaches and villages.

2. Donkey or Mule

• Used for carrying luggage or reaching hillside homes.
• A unique Hydra tradition.

3. Water Taxis

• Small boats can take you to remote beaches or nearby spots along the coast.
• They operate like on-demand taxis.

Popular beaches accessible by water taxi: Vlichos, Plakes, Bisti, Agios Nikolaos.

Flying is the fastest and most convenient way to reach Corfu, especially during the busy summer months.

International Flights

Corfu International Airport (CFU) -Ioannis Kapodistrias Airport- welcomes direct flights from several European cities during the summer season (April to October).

Major airlines operate regular routes from the UK, Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, and more. Low-cost carriers like Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air also offer seasonal routes.

Domestic Flights

If you’re already in Greece, you can catch a quick domestic flight to Corfu from Athens. The flight from Athens International Airport (ATH) to Corfu takes about 1 hour. There are multiple daily flights.

Tip: Book early in the high season (June–August) as flights fill up quickly.

How to Get to Corfu by Ferry

Ferries from Mainland Greece

• Igoumenitsa to Corfu: This is the most common and quickest ferry route. The journey takes about 1.5–2 hours, with multiple departures daily. You can travel as a foot passenger or with a vehicle.
• Patras to Corfu: Less frequent and longer (around 6–7 hours), this route connects Corfu with western Greece and can be a convenient stop if you’re coming from the Peloponnese.

Athens isn’t directly connected to Corfu by ferry, so your two main options are a flight or a combination of bus and ferry.

Flight from Athens

As mentioned earlier, a direct flight from Athens to Corfu takes just about an hour. There are multiple daily flights operated by Aegean Airlines, Sky Express, and Olympic Air.

Bus + Ferry via Igoumenitsa

• Take a KTEL bus from Athens to Igoumenitsa (approx. 6–7 hours).
• Catch a ferry from Igoumenitsa to Corfu (1.5–2 hours).

This is a budget-friendly option, and the bus and ferry schedules are usually well coordinated.

How to Get to Corfu from Other Greek Islands

Corfu is part of the Ionian Islands group, and connections to other islands vary depending on the season and island location.

From Paxos

• Paxos is just a short ferry ride away. Regular hydrofoils and ferries take about 1 hour.

From Lefkada, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos

• While there are no direct ferries between Corfu and these islands, Lefkada Palace offers island-hopping services that connect Corfu with Lefkada, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos during the summer.
• These routes may stop at other smaller islands and can take several hours, but they offer a scenic journey through the Ionian Sea.

From Cyclades, Crete, or the Dodecanese

• There are no direct ferries to Corfu from islands in the Aegean Sea. You’ll need to transit through the mainland (e.g., Athens or Patras) or fly back to Athens and then onward to Corfu.

How to Move Around Corfu

Once you’re on the island, getting around is relatively easy:

1. Car or Scooter Rental

• Ideal if you want to explore beaches and remote villages.
• Roads are mostly in good condition, and parking is available in most towns.
• Taxis are available but can be pricey.

2. Public Buses (KTEL)

• Budget-friendly and reliable.
• Connects major towns and tourist areas like Corfu Town, Paleokastritsa, Kavos, and Sidari.

You can fly in for speed or sail across the Ionian for the views. No matter your favorite wat to travel, getting to Corfu is quite simple and part of the adventure. Travel to Corfu is made easy thanks to travel options and good internal transport.

The Cyclades are the quintessential Greek islands, combining gorgeous beaches, picturesque towns, fascinating history, and unforgettable views.

If you’ve got a week to explore, here’s an itinerary featuring three of the most diverse and stunning islands in the group: Mykonos, Naxos, and Santorini. These islands offer a taste of everything: nightlife, peaceful beaches, and ancient landmarks!

Day 1: Arrival in Mykonos

Morning
Arrive in Mykonos and get settled into your hotel. One of the most iconic Greek islands, Mykonos is known for its pedestrian Chora (or Mykonos town) but also for its nightlife. However, Mykonos also has plenty of history and culture to offer.

Since you will be staying in Mykonos for just a couple of days, I suggest staying in Chora so you’re a short drive or bus ride away from everywhere.

Afternoon
Devote the first afternoon to discovering Mykonos Town (Chora). Explore the narrow streets lined with shops, cafes, and art galleries and don’t miss the iconic windmills close to the sea and the area known as Little Venice.

Pick a table by the water and order a glass of freddo espresso. You will love witnessing the sunset in the area.

Evening
Treat yourself to a seafood dinner at one of many restaurants in town, either by the sea or in Chora. Then, dive into the island’s nightlife with a visit to one of its popular bars or nightclubs.

Overnight: Mykonos

Day 2: Mykonos Beaches and Delos Island

Some of the best beaches in the Cyclades are in Mykonos, so don’t miss the chance to visit at least one of them. You can spend there the whole day or, if you’re also interested in myth and history, check out the ancient site of Delos.

Morning
Begin your day by relaxing on one of Mykonos’ stunning beaches. Psarou Beach is ideal for a more luxurious experience with crystal-clear waters, while Paraga and Agios Stefanos offer a more laid-back vibe.

And if, instead of heading to Delos in the afternoon, you’d rather spend the whole day at the beach, I suggest visiting the fantastic Elia, one of the nicest beaches on the island.

Afternoon
Hop on a boat to Delos, a sacred, uninhabited island just off Mykonos. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to fascinating ruins, such as the Temple of Apollo and the Terrace of the Lions. You will get to learn a lot about ancient Greek history, especially if you decide to book a guided tour.

Evening
After returning to Mykonos, enjoy a sunset dinner with views of the windmills at Kato Mili, then take a leisurely walk around the town and purchase a few souvenirs.

Day 3: Mykonos to Naxos

On Day 3, head to Naxos, a peaceful island that’s about an hour away by ferry.

Morning
Once you arrive in Naxos, check into your hotel and head out for a walk along the seaside promenade. Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades, and is known for its beautiful beaches and mountain villages, but also for unique ancient ruins.

Stop for lunch at any of the waterfront restaurants. I always recommend Yasouvlaki for affordable yet traditional meals.

Since you’ll stay in Naxos for just a few nights, my suggestion is to book a hotel or a studio in the center of town or near Agia Anna Beach.

Afternoon
Explore Naxos Town (Chora), where you can explore the old Venetian Castle and the narrow quiet streets. Head closer to the waterfront to visit local shops and then head to the Portara. It’s very easy to get there on foot from the center of town.

The impressive marble gate is what remains of a probably ancient temple dedicated to God Apollo. From here, the sea views are fantastic. it is also the most popular spot on the island to see the sunset.

Evening
Back to the center of town, my suggestion is to head to the waterfront for dinner at a traditional taverna, and savor some fresh seafood or Naxian beef, potatoes, and cheeses, three staples produced on the island.

Overnight: Naxos

Day 4: Naxos Villages and Beaches

Morning:
Rent a scooter or car to visit some of Naxos’ quaint inland villages. Apiranthos, with its marble alleys and houses offers a quiet escape, while Halki, is one of the most traditional settlements on the island, perfect for a walk and a traditional lunch in a local taverna. Over here, you can also visit the Vallindras Distillery to try Naxos’ famous spirit, kitron.

Afternoon
Spend the afternoon relaxing on one of Naxos’ beautiful beaches like Agios Prokopios or Agia Anna, which are famous for their golden sands and crystal-clear waters. These spots are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or water sports.

If you’re more of a beach person and are not interested in exploring the villages in the morning, then head to Plaka Beach and spend a wonderful day by the sea in one of Naxos’ best beaches.

Evening
It’s a great idea to head to Agios Prokopios beach and enjoy dinner at one of the seafront tavernas or restaurants in the area. Order a bottle of wine and enjoy local dishes, including Naxian sausages with eggs (Kavourmas saganaki. Don’t forget to taste local cheeses such as Naxian Graviera, Arseniko, or Kefalotyri.

Day 5: Naxos to Santorini

On this day, it’s time to head to the last destination in this one-week island-hopping itinerary. You will take a ferry to Santorini, one of the most breathtaking islands in the world!

Morning
Arrive in Santorini (about a 2-hour ferry ride) and check into your hotel. The best thing to do for a short stay is to prefer a hotel in Fira. If you’re on a budget, avoid hotels facing the Caldera, which are more expensive and look for a hotel near the center.

Afternoon
In the afternoon ride a car, a taxi, or the local bus and reach the northernmost tip on the island, Oia. Spend the afternoon exploring this picturesque village perched on the caldera’s edge. Wander through the streets, visit gorgeous churches, but also boutiques and art galleries, and don’t miss the world-famous sunset view.

The most popular spot to get a priviledged sunset view in Oia is the ancient castle of Oia. Get there at least two hours before sunset hour to secure a spot because it’s often very crowded.

Evening
Enjoy dinner in either Oia or Fira with a view of the caldera. Don’t forget to try a glass of Assyrtiko, Santorini’s famous local white wine. And if you’re wondering what to eat, prefer local dishes, including fava puree, tomato fritters, and local white eggplants.

Day 6: Santorini’s Beaches and Ruins

Santorini also offers plenty of history and wonderful landscapes, often with dramatic views due to the volcanic nature of the island.

Morning
Start your day with a visit to the ancient ruins of Akrotiri, a Minoan settlement preserved by a volcanic eruption. Similar to Pompeii, this archaeological site will introduce you to important details of ancient life on the Greek Islands.

If you’re following this itinerary in summer, I strongly suggest to visit in the morning to avoid the hottest hours, despite being a covered archaeological site, temperatures can soar.

Afternoon
Not far from the ruins, you can explore one of the most beautiful beaches in Santorini, Red Beach. Over here, after a short hike next to the walls of the caldera, you will find a shore surrounded by striking red cliffs and a perfect spot to go snorkeling.

If you enjoy hikes, also check out the fantastic Santorini Lighthouse not far from the Red Beach, it’s a short walk but the views are spectacular.

If you prefer something different, check out Kamari Beach or Perissa Beach, with their black sand and lively beachside cafes. Perissa is easier to reach and not as crowded as Kamari, which is closer to Fira.

Evening
For your last night in Santorini, enjoy a delicious dinner at a cliffside restaurant overlooking the caldera. And if you can, also book a wine tasting experience to go with the dinner and enjoy your last sunset over the Aegean.

Day 7: Santorini and Departure

On your last day in Santorini, take in the island’s beauty one last time before heading to your next destination.

Morning
If you have time before your flight, stroll through Fira, Santorini’s capital, to explore its shops and cafes. Alternatively, take a short boat trip in the caldera or treat yourself to a relaxing spa experience at a luxury resort.

Afternoon
Head to the airport or port for your departure, whether you’re returning to Athens or continuing your Greek adventure.

This 7-day journey through Mykonos, Naxos, and Santorini will take you from the streets of Mykonos to the quiet Naxos’ villages, and the world-renowned sunsets in Santorini.

The Cyclades, a group of Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, are Mediterranean destinations, super popular in summer, that offer an incredible mix of beaches, history, culture, and beautiful landscapes.

If you’re planning to spend a week in Greece and are thinking of visiting the islands, this itinerary will take you through three of its most popular islands: Santorini, Paros, and Mykonos.

These islands are a must-see and offer excellent entertainment for young travelers and a dose of romantic views for couples. This super classic itinerary is perfect if you’re in the mood for nightlife ad beaches, but also if you enjoy exploring ancient ruins and discovering the excellent culinary delights of the country.

Day 1: Arrival in Santorini

Begin your Greek island adventure in Santorini, arguably the most iconic island in the Cyclades.

Morning
Arrive in Santorini and check into your hotel. I always suggest to stay in Fira so that youre in the center of the island, and moving around is easier whether you rent a car or you prefer taxi or buses.

With its caldera views and cliffs, Fira will offer an amazing welcome to the island.

Afternoon
Head to the northern tip of the island (buses leave from Fira’s public bus station) and take your first stroll through Oia, one of the most picturesque towns in Greece. Its narrow, cobbled streets are lined with beautiful boutiques, art galleries, and cafes.

Don’t miss the chance to witness the famous Santorini sunset as the sun dips into the Aegean. My suggestion is to head to the ruins of the ancient Oia castle to find a spot for one of the most popular moments on the island. The place gets overcrowded fast, so get there at least 2 hours before the sun sets!

Evening
Enjoy a meal at one of Oia’s cliffside restaurants with a panoramic view of the caldera. Make sure to sample some of Santorini’s local delicacies, such as fava puree or freshly grilled seafood.

Keep in mind that when dining in Oia you will also be paying for the views, expect higher price tags on the menu. Also consider booking in advance.

Day 2: Santorini’s Ancient Sites and Beaches

Morning
Start early and head to the south of the island to visit the archaeological site of Akrotiri, an ancient Minoan city that was buried by the impressive volcanic eruption that for ever changed the landscape in Santorini.

Devote one to two hours to walk through the site to get a a glimpse into life during the Bronze Age and learn about one of the most advanced ancient civilizations in Europe.

Afternoon
After soaking up some history, make your way to one of Santorini’s unique beaches. The striking Red Beach, just a short walk from the archaeological site, is a unique beach made of red volcanic cliffs that contrast with turquoise crystal-clear water.

Some hiking is required to get to the beach, so if you prefer a more quite activity, I suggest driving to the black sand beach of Perissa, about 15 minutes by car from Akrotiri.

Evening
For a relaxed evening, enjoy dinner at a seaside taverna with a view of the volcano in Fira. Savor local dishes such as tomato fritters or grilled octopus, paired with a glass of Assyrtiko, Santorini’s famous white wine.

Day 3: Santorini to Paros

On Day 3, leave Santorini behind and take a ferry to Paros, a popular summer destination for Greek youth and foreigners. The beautiful whitewashed island is the quintessential image of the Cyclades, featuring towns with characteristic blue-domed churches and cobble alleys with colorful flowers… a postcard-like picture!

Morning
Arrive in Paros and check into your accommodation. The island is full of traditional Cycladic charm, with beautiful whitewashed houses, narrow streets, and peaceful beaches.

My suggestion is to stay in Parikia so as to remain close to the departure point and enjoy the best of the capital. Over here, you will find endless accommodation options, but also car rental offices, banks, pharmacies, supermarkets, souvenir stores, restaurants, and bars.

Afternoon
Begin your exploration of Paros in Parikia, the island’s capital. Stroll through its old town and visit the Panagia Ekatontapiliani, a beautiful Byzantine church that’s the biggest on the island.

Afterward, take a walk along the harbor and enjoy the relaxed vibe of the town.

Evening
If you enjoy romantic views and want to soak the best of Paros, then heading to Naoussa for dinner is an excellent idea. You can get there by bus or taxi, although I suggest renting a car to make the most of your short stay on the island.

This picturesque fishing village is known for its seafood restaurants and laid-back nightlife. Enjoy dinner by the harbor and watch the boats come in.

Day 4: Paros Villages and Beaches

Paros offers plenty of opportunities to explore its scenic villages and beautiful beaches.

Morning
If you’ve rented a scooter or car, it will be easy to discover Paros’ inland villages. Visit Lefkes, a traditional hilltop village, once capital of the island.

Lefkes has a magnificent church, cobblestone streets, traditional homes, and stunning views overlooking the sea. Then head to Marpissa, another lovely whitewashed village on the island.

Afternoon
Spend the afternoon relaxing on one of Paros’ beautiful beaches. Kolymbithres Beach, with its unique granite rock formations, is a must-see. If you’re after quiet sunbathing or long swimming hours, then head Golden Beach. Catching the sunset from this beach witll be a wonderful experience.

Evening
For a tranquil evening, have dinner at a taverna in Parikia, enjoying local specialties like grilled octopus and a glass of Parian wine. After dinner, go for an ice cream.

Since souvenir will be cheaper in Paros than on Santoriny or Mykonos, you should certainly go souvenir shopping on this island!

Day 5: Paros to Mykonos

After soaking in the serenity of Paros, hop on a ferry to Mykonos, the island that blends glamour with tradition. Mykonos is the liveliest spot in the Cyclades, home to dozens of beach bars, discos, and club that attract young crowds from all over the world year after year.

Not interested in nightlife? Worry not! You will find that there’s a lot more to Mykonos than dancing until the next day!

Morning
Arrive in Mykonos, check into your hotel, and start your exploration of the island’s charming town. Mykonos is famous for its lively atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and vibrant nightlife.

I suggest staying in town for a short stay in Mykonos like this one. If you plan to stay several days, love the beaches, or are not interested in nightlife, Platys Gialos or Ornos can be better places to stay.

Afternoon
Spend your afternoon wandering through the narrow streets of Mykonos Town (Chora). Explore its boutique-lined alleys, visit the iconic windmills, and stroll through Little Venice, a picturesque area where the buildings seem to sit right on the water.

If you have time, head to the whiewashed Panagia Paraportiana church for stunning photos, it’s just a few steps from Little Venice’s waterfront.

Once you’ve visited the church, go back to the shore, pick a waterfront cafe in the area, and enjoy the sunset views, it is one of the most iconic things to do in Mykonos!

Evening
As night falls, head to one of Mykonos’ restaurants for dinner. You’ll find plenty of lively spots offering everything from Mediterranean delicacies to international cuisine.

You can end your night dancing in the seaside bars close to Mykonos Chora, or you can head back to the hotel early, ready for a second day of interesting excursions.

Day 6: Mykonos Beaches and Delos Island

No trip to Mykonos is complete without a visit to its beaches and the nearby archaeological treasure of Delos.

Morning
Start your day with some beach time. Psarou Beach offers a luxurious atmosphere with crystal-clear waters, while Paraga and Agios Stefanos provide a more laid-back vibe.

Getting there is easy if you’ve rented a car. Alternatively, buses depart from Mykonos town frequently to all these destinations.

Afternoon
Head back to the old port by lunchtime and rake a boat trip to Delos, an uninhabited island known for its extensive archaeological ruins. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was once a major religious center in ancient Greece.

My suggestion is to hire an official guide or book a guided tour to explore the ancient temples, the famous Terrace of the Lions, and other remnants of this sacred island.

Evening
Return to Mykonos and enjoy a sunset dinner at one of the island’s waterside restaurants. Then, if you’re up for it, experience Mykonos’ famous nightlife by heading to one of its renowned clubs or bars. As an alternative, a relaxing walk in the old town is a simple but great way to end your second day on the island

Day 7: Mykonos and Departure

Enjoy a last taste of Mykonos before you leave!

Morning
If you’ve got some time before your departure, take a leisurely walk around Mykonos Town. Check out the boutiques, sip a coffee, or relax by the waterfront.

Afternoon
Head to the port or airport for your onward journey. You can either head back to Athens or continue your Greek adventure on a bigger island like Crete. No matter what’s your next destination, this itinerary will surely leave unforgettable memories of the Cyclades.
