What to Pack for Athens in April: The Ultimate Spring Packing Guide

April in Athens is a great time to visit – the weather is generally mild, with plenty of sunshine but not too hot. In this post, I share with you the basic things you need to pack in your bag to visit Athens in April.

If you are wondering what to pack in Athens for a trip in september, you need to consider that temperatures typically range between 12°C (54°F) in the early mornings/evenings to 20°C (68°F) during the day.

With that in mind, here’s a packing list to help you prepare for a comfortable and enjoyable trip to Athens.

Clothing

  • Light Jacket or Sweater: April can still have cool mornings and evenings, so a light jacket or a cozy sweater is a must. Consider something lightweight and easy to layer for changing temperatures.
  • T-Shirts and Long-Sleeve Tops: Pack a mix of short-sleeve and long-sleeve shirts. You’ll likely be fine with a t-shirt during the day, but the long sleeves will be helpful during cooler evenings.
  • Comfortable Pants/Jeans: Pack a couple of pairs of comfortable jeans or pants. A pair of linen pants is a great option for a light, breathable choice if you want something cooler.
  • Shorts/Skirts: Depending on your preference, bring shorts or skirts for warmer days, especially if you’re planning to be outside during midday when it can get warmer.
  • Lightweight Scarf: A light scarf can be a stylish addition and help with any cool breezes in the evenings. It also serves as a great cover-up when visiting religious sites.
  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: Comfortable shoes are essential for exploring Athens’ cobbled streets, ancient ruins, and museums. Sneakers or comfortable walking sandals (if it’s warmer) are ideal.
If you plan to do any hiking (e.g., to Lycabettus Hill), consider packing a pair of hiking shoes.
  • Flip-Flops or Sandals: These are great for relaxing at your hotel, especially as the weather gets warmer.
  • Light Sweater or Cardigan: Even during the day, it can be a bit chilly in the mornings or evenings, so a light sweater or cardigan for layering is useful.

Accessories

  • Sun Protection:
    – Sunglasses to protect your eyes from the strong spring sunshine.
    – Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to protect your skin from the sun, even during the cooler months.
    – A hat (e.g., a wide-brimmed hat) to shield your face from the sun when walking around outdoor sites.
  • Light Backpack or Tote: A small backpack or crossbody bag will come in handy for carrying essentials like a water bottle, camera, sunscreen, and any items you pick up along the way. You might also want to bring a foldable tote for shopping or souvenirs.
  • Travel Umbrella or Light Rain Jacket: While April isn’t typically a rainy month in Athens, it can have the occasional shower. Pack a light rain jacket just in case.
  • Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is important, especially if you plan on walking and sightseeing a lot. Bring a reusable water bottle to refill throughout the day.

Toiletries & Health Items

  • Personal Hygiene Items: Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and other essentials.
  • Travel-sized Shampoo, Conditioner & Soap: Many hotels provide toiletries, but if you prefer your own, pack travel-sized bottles.
  • Medications/First Aid Kit: Don’t forget any necessary prescriptions or over-the-counter medications. A basic first aid kit with band-aids, pain relievers, and any personal items (e.g., allergy medications) can be handy.
  • Hand Sanitizer & Wet Wipes: Useful for cleaning hands after public transportation or touching surfaces.
  • Tissues or Pocket Pack of Wet Wipes: These come in handy, especially when visiting historical sites where bathrooms may not always be well-stocked.

Technology

  • Phone & Charger: Don’t forget your phone and charging cable. You might also want a power bank for when you’re on the go and need extra battery life.
  • Plug Adapter: Greece uses Type C and Type F plugs, so make sure you have a compatible adapter for your electronics.
  • Camera or GoPro: If you plan on taking a lot of photos or video, bring a camera or GoPro with extra batteries or a power bank for recharging on the go.
  • Headphones or Earbuds: If you plan to travel by public transport or spend some downtime, headphones are always useful.
  • Portable Wi-Fi Device or SIM Card: If you need to stay connected, consider getting a local SIM card or renting a portable Wi-Fi hotspot for reliable internet access.

Documents

  • Passport & ID: Make sure you have your passport, ID card (if applicable), and any required visas (if necessary). Keep a photocopy of your passport just in case.
  • Travel Insurance: It’s always a good idea to have travel insurance for coverage during your trip, especially for unexpected events.
  • Hotel Reservations & Tickets: Have a printed or digital copy of your hotel bookings, museum tickets, and other reservations.
  • Credit Cards & Euros: While most places in Athens accept credit cards, it’s always good to have some local currency (Euros) on hand for small purchases. Inform your bank of your travels to avoid any issues with international transactions.

Optional Items:

  • Notebook and Pen: A travel journal or notebook to jot down memories or things you want to remember from your trip.
  • Small Locks for Luggage: Helpful if you plan to leave luggage in a hotel or shared space and want to keep it secure.
  • Books or E-Reader: If you want to relax or unwind in a park or café, a book or e-reader can be great company.

What to Leave Behind:

  • Heavy Jackets or Winter Clothes: April in Athens is generally mild, so you won’t need bulky winter gear.
  • Umbrella (Optional): Rain in April is rare, so only bring one if you’re particularly cautious about the weather.
  • Too Many Pairs of Shoes: You don’t need a large selection – one pair of comfortable walking shoes should be sufficient, plus something casual but smart for the evenings.

Athens in April offers pleasant spring weather, ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. By packing light layers, comfortable walking shoes, and essentials like sunscreen and a hat, you’ll be well-prepared for a fantastic trip to this historic city.
