The Greek Islands are some of the most popular summer destinations in the world, and for good reason! If you’re planning to relax on pristine beaches, explore ancient ruins, or soak in amazing sunset views, packing for a trip to the Greek Islands can be tricky.
You’ll want to make sure you’re prepared for everything while keeping your luggage light and practical. Keep this packing list at hand to know everything you should put in your luggage!
1. Clothing Essentials
When packing for the Greek Islands, think light, breathable clothing that will keep you cool during the hot summer days, while still being stylish enough for the picturesque towns and evening dinners.
- Lightweight Tops & Bottoms: Cotton or linen shirts and breezy pants or shorts are perfect for staying cool in the sun. Opt for neutral tones or vibrant Mediterranean colors like white, blue, or terracotta.
- Dresses & Skirts: Easy-to-wear sundresses or skirts for dinners or exploring the villages. Maxi dresses are also a great option for an elegant yet comfortable look.
- Swimwear: You’ll be spending a lot of time by the sea, so make sure you pack at least 2-3 swimsuits. A bikini, a one-piece, or whatever style you feel comfortable in.
- Light Sweater or Jacket: Although it’s hot during the day, the evenings on some islands can get cooler or windy. A light cardigan or denim jacket is a great layering piece.
- Sarong or Beach Cover-Up: Perfect for beach lounging or walking around the islands in style but also necessary if you plan to visit religious sites, as many require modest clothing.

2. Footwear
Comfort is key when walking around the cobblestone streets or lounging by the beach.
- Comfortable Walking Shoes: Think flat sandals or sneakers for exploring villages and ancient ruins. Stylish yet practical footwear is essential.
- Flip Flops/Beach Sandals: Perfect for the beach and poolside.
- Dressy Sandals: If you’re planning on dining out in a nicer setting, bring a pair of sandals that can elevate your look. Pick them flat or with wedgets for comfortable walking.

3. Sun Protection
The Greek sun can be intense, so it’s important to protect yourself from UV rays to avoid sunburn or heatstroke.
- Sunscreen: SPF 30 or higher is recommended. Be sure to apply it regularly throughout the day, especially after swimming.
- Hat: A wide-brimmed hat will keep the sun off your face while adding a chic touch to your outfit.
- Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the glare of the sun with a good pair of UV-protected sunglasses.
- Aloe Vera Gel: A soothing gel for any skin irritation after sun exposure. It’s always good to have it on hand.

4. Accessories
Accessories can help elevate your look while serving a functional purpose.
- Small Backpack or Crossbody Bag: A small, lightweight bag for daily excursions will keep your hands free and your valuables safe.
- Beach Bag: A large tote bag to carry your towel, sunscreen, book, and snacks to the beach. If you choose a canvas tote, it can double as a bag to carry groceries or souvenirs if you go shopping.

5. Toiletries
While many accommodations will provide basic toiletries, it’s always better to bring your favorites with you.
- Travel-Sized Shampoo & Conditioner: Opt for a travel kit or small bottles to save space in your bag.
- Toothbrush & Toothpaste: Essentials you don’t want to forget!
- Deodorant: You’ll be walking a lot in the summer heat, so make sure you stay fresh.
- Razor/Personal Care Items: If needed, don’t forget to pack your shaving kit, tweezers, or any other personal hygiene items.
- Bug Repellent: Mosquitoes can be a nuisance, especially in the evenings. A travel-sized bottle of bug repellent will help keep them at bay.

6. Technology & Gadgets
Whether you want to capture the beauty of the islands or stay connected, these items will come in handy.
- Phone & Charger: Your phone is your lifeline for navigation, photos, and staying connected. Don’t forget a portable charger for those long days of exploring.
- Camera or GoPro: The Greek Islands are picture-perfect, so be sure to bring a camera to capture all the beautiful moments.
- Adapter & Converter: Greece uses the European-style two-pronged plugs, so bring an adapter if your devices use a different plug type.
- E-Reader or Books: Relax on the beach with your favorite book, or load up your Kindle with travel guides and novels.

7. Health & Safety Essentials
To ensure you have a safe and smooth trip, pack these health-related items.
- Prescription Medications: Be sure to bring enough for the entire trip, along with a copy of your prescription in case you need a refill.
- First-Aid Kit: Pack basic items like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any specific medications you might need.
- Travel Insurance Information: Always travel with insurance. Make sure you have your insurance details handy in case of any emergencies.

8. Snacks & Drinks
The Greek Islands offer delicious food, but it’s always a good idea to have some snacks on hand for when you’re out exploring.
- Energy Bars or Nuts: Great for a quick snack between sightseeing or when you’re hiking around the islands.
- Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated in the heat and reduce plastic waste with a refillable bottle.

9. Documents & Money
When traveling to the Greek Islands, it’s essential to have all the necessary documentation for a smooth trip. Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll need:
- Personal ID & Passport: Make sure to carry both electronic and paper copies of your passport and personal ID, in case your originals are lost or stolen. Having a backup ensures you won’t encounter any issues with identification.
- Travel Insurance Details: Have a copy of your travel insurance for peace of mind.
- International Driver’s Permit: If you’re coming from the USA, Canada, Australia, the UK, the EU, or Gibraltar, you do not need an international driver’s permit to rent a car in Greece. You can use your national driving permit as long as you’re over 18 years old). However, if you’re from another country, check to see if an International Driver’s Permit is required.
- Visa/ETIAS (from 2025): Depending on your nationality, you may need a visa to visit Greece. Check if you require a visa or an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) before you go. Do I need a Visa? Read more.
- Credit/Debit Cards & Cash: While most places in Greece accept credit and debit cards, it’s wise to carry some cash with you. Smaller islands may only have one or two ATMs, and not all of them accept American Express, so it’s better to have alternatives like Visa or MasterCard. Make sure you have enough cash for day trips or purchases in more remote areas, having a little bit of cash in euros is handy, especially in smaller towns or markets.
- Boarding Pass: Keep a copy of your boarding pass handy, either on your mobile device or printed. You’ll need it when checking in or boarding your flight.
- Emergency Contact Information: Always have your emergency contact details accessible. It’s a good idea to store this information somewhere easily retrievable in case of any unexpected situations during your trip.
Having all these documents prepared and organized will help ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable vacation in the Greek Islands.

10. Other Essentials
A few extra items can make your trip more enjoyable.
- Towel or Beach Blanket: Not all beaches will have loungers, so bring your own towel to relax on the sand.
- Travel Guidebook or Map: Handy for exploring on your own, especially if you don’t have internet access in remote areas.
