Things to Do in Antiparos with Kids

Apart from the peace of mind, such a relaxed island brings to parents, not everything looks so quiet to kids’ eyes. Getting lost in the maze of alleys in the chora can be an adventure.

Our kids loved to wander the Kastro, the old fortress in the center of the village. Exploring every single abandoned angle, playing hide and seek, or stopping to look (and caress) every single lonely cat that came across their path.

Pedestrian streets allowed them to go around in total safety, discovering signs (they are learning Greek and every sign to read is a challenge!), colorful trees and flowers, and places where to eat the best gyros… which is always a feast for kids.

Visit the Beaches of Antiparos with the Kids

Among the things that kids love the most while in Greece are the fantastic beaches of the islands. Well, at least my kids are hard to get out of the sea..!

Many beaches in Antiparos are great for kids, most of them are safe and shallow, with turquoise water and very fine sand.

Near our hotel, they enjoyed two of the most peaceful places. The beach is known as the Camping Beach because it’s near the only camping site you’ll find in Antiparos, and the other one is Theologos, so shallow and calm it look almost like a lagoon. One of the best ones for toddlers and small kids.

I would recommend this beach for families with children. Several trees offer enough shadow and there are no winds in the area.

What’s more, the center of town is barely 10 minutes away, so you do not need to bring supplies to spend your day there.

The beach of Sifneikos (thus called as you can see Sifnos in the distance) is a bit rougher for kids. Great for adults and irreplaceable for sunsets!

Best Beaches for Kids in Antiparos

Other beaches relatively close to the chora are Psarailyki A and Psaralyki B, together with Panagia and Glyfa. They are more traditional places.

There, just lying in the sun or a good, long swim in such crystal waters is nothing but the natural thing to do. Their closeness to the village makes them the most popular in high peak months.

The best moments to enjoy these beaches are, obviously, the months of May and September, when the island is at its best.

Going down the road bit further Soros will capture your senses. This beach has become the most exclusive place to be, to be seen, and to see on the island.

We were lucky enough to visit in May and find the beach empty, with a paradise touch to it.

The colors of the water here change during the day provoking amazing combinations of blues and greens. There is a nice bar where to have cold drinks.

Soros Beach

A lazy day in Soros is one of those little pleasures Antiparos rewards its visitors with. If you are an active type, pack your beach bag at about 7.00 pm to reach Faneromeni. This solitary beach on the Southern tip of the island offers one of the most attractive sunset settings.

Agios Georgios

My favorite beach of all, however, was Agios Georgios, on Despotiko Bay. The magnificent scenery you get from the road that leads there is stunning.

Despite its beauty, people seem to prefer the comfort of the beaches closer to the village, giving this spot solitary magic. In this area, you can get on a boat and venture yourself to discover the magic colors of Antiparos caves.

Where impressive volcanic formations mix with the emerald color the sun produces when touching the surface of the sea.

For the best swim ever, cross the little bay to reach the island of Despotiko. Apart from the wonders of the archaeological site, there’s a secluded beach with a little church behind it.

Spend there some peaceful hours, until it’s time to get back to Antiparos. Agios Giorgos can be reached by car but also by the local bus.

On the opposite side of Antiparos, the beaches of Monastiria and Livadia are more solitary and less easy to reach.

Either you need a car or you can rent a bike.

This coast of the island is often affected on windy days. However, being more distant, it’s not rare to find a lonely spot to spend a day in full privacy.

Sail to Despotiko Island

If you visit Antiparos there’s no way you miss a day trip to Despotiko island. Captain Sargos took us to Despotiko his trip is perfectly planned to enjoy a bit of everything.

We departed at around eleven with our captain and his friendly sailor retriever. The first stop was an exploration of the caves of Antiparos.

A palette of blues, greens, and turquoise cleverly mixes with the gray shades of the rock formations around you. Curious shapes that allow the boat to venture under natural rock bridges and mysterious angles are difficult to forget.

Then, there’s the actual crossing of the sea to reach the archaeological site. Despotiko is almost in the center of the Cyclades. On clear days it offers spectacular views of Antiparos, Syros, Serifos, Sifnos, Sikinos, and Ios.

On the tiny island, the flora is rich and wild. In Spring you will enjoy the colors and perfumes of herbs and daisies.

Discover the Archaeological Site on Despotiko Island

Significant archaeological findings give Despotiko similar characteristics to the sacred island of Delos. Due to its central position, the area played an important role in sea navigation. Archaeological excavations brought to light an important late Archaic sanctuary.

Objects still visible on the different layers of the ground prove the link the island maintained to mainland Greece and part of the Mediterranean during several eras.

Our guide also explained that the still visible sanctuary was probably in honor of Apollo.

If you are interested in seeing some of the objects found there, you will find them exhibited in the archaeological museum of Parikia (Paros), but trust me, my kids had extreme fun discovering pieces of pottery on the ground everywhere.

After the visit to the archaeological site, the boat departs from the close-by dock to take you to the beach of Despotiko. It’s possible to agree with your captain how much time you’d like to spend there.

Go to the Beach in Despotiko

Captain Sargos will return to take you back when you are ready to leave. This is one of the most beautiful places on Despotiko, with a fantastic view of Antiparos.

For certain, the day trip to Despotiko was among our kids’ favorites while in Antiparos.

Discover the Cave of Antiparos

The Cave of Antiparos is located in the center of the island, on the hill of Agios Ioannis. And take your camera with you because the landscapes you will admire going up there are pretty unique.

Without any doubt, this was the kid’s best day in Antiparos. Who could blame them? I think that, so far, the Cave is the most magical place we have ever visited on any Greek island.

Despite the 411 steps down (and, of course, up) you need to endure, the cave rewards you with priceless bizarre views.

In 1673 the French ambassador of Constantinople made it to the cave and explored its interiors. Together with his crew, they went down the caves with ropes and candles.

There, they were amazed (as you will too!) to discover the impressive natural formations still visible inside.

This expedition took place around Christmas time, so the ambassador performed a mass at the top of a stalagmite very similar to an altar. Inscriptions in Latin are still visible.

Many famous people paid a visit to the site, leaving their signatures as a memory of their adventures.

At the entrance, the first thing you see is a white church in contrast with the color of the rock. It’s the church of Agios Ioannis Spiliotis (St John of the Cave).

Right there, there’s a huge stalagmite, probably the oldest in Europe, about 45 million years old.

Descending the safe stairs to the heart of the cave, it’s difficult to decide where to look at. Which angle looks weirder, where nature has left a breathtaking trace?

Unfortunately, some of the most spectacular formations of stalactites and stalagmites were mutilated by earlier visitors. Yet, the panorama remains one of a kind. One curious fact: it takes 80 to 120 years to create one cm of stalagmite.

More About the Cave of Antiparos

It’s located 8km from the Chora and opens every day from 10.00 to 15.00. The last public bus departs at about 15.15, but do check the local bus schedule here.

In Summer there is a difference in temperature from outside to inside. Take a light coat.

A tired teen is a moody teen, so go for lightweight luggage for full peace of mind too!

The Right Measure for Your Teen’s Backpack

Teens’ backpacks are similar to adult backpacks in size but might be less fancy and with a reduced capacity.

For my 19-year-old, I had been thinking about transitioning from a 40-liter to a 55-liter backpack, and it was a mistake! It turns out my son is not such a fashion victim, loves to pack plain patterns, and has learned to wash some of his clothes when he is on a trip, so a 55-liter backpack was way too big.

My 15-year-old instead, loves to pack extra… so he is really eager to go from his 40-liter to a bigger model. As usual, it all depends on the length of the trip, and even more, on how much your teen will want to pack.

In general, I suggest parents go for a backpack around the 40-liter range. If the backpack is sturdy and made with quality material, chances are that your kid will use this backpack for many years.

Best Backpack Style for Teens

When it comes to backpacks for teens, there are two styles you will want to consider, a backpack with a front-loading system, which can be opened just like a suitcase, or a backpack that opens from the top, more of a hiking backpack style.

Both can have different pros and cons. In short, when it comes to looking for items fast, front-loading backpacks are more comfortable.

On the other hand, hiking backpacks are slimmer and longer, easier to carry, and often offer more back support as they are made for being carried for longer times.

However, choosing the style of the backpack is your kid’s personal preference. Darker colors are winners, both for boys and girls.

Hard Shell or Soft Shell

This is a no-brainer, at least for me, a soft shell is a way to go, no matter the destination.

Even if you worry about your kid traveling with expensive electronic devices and gadgets that might suffer from the lack of protection, it’s always better to invest in a protective case for an iPad or a portable Nintendo console than getting a hardshell backpack to do the job.

If that’s the case with your kids, do invest in a waterproof backpack.

With or Without Wheels

Wheeled backpacks are great for long-distance travel and for moving around in the airport, however, the bigger the backpack, the heavier the wheel system becomes.

Since teens will be buying a backpack that’s almost good also for an adult, consider that the wheel frame will be heavier and often bulkier. It won’t just only steal storage space, but it can add extra unneeded weight putting pressure on your teen’s back

I often prefer models without wheels, especially when there’s island hopping with ferries involved, or if I know that walking uphill will be part of the deal to reach the hotel.

Remember that on most islands (Santorini is a great example) walking on cobblestoned alleys or climbing stairs is the norm.

If you’re planning a lot of short day trips during your travels, do consider adding a foldable backpack inside the main backpack.

With a 13,676-kilometer-long coast (about 8,500 miles), Greece has some of the best beaches in Europe, and this is not just because of its many islands! The country has also amazing shores on the mainland. Some of them are quiet and secluded, and other ones more popular, even featuring great water sports facilities.

No matter where you decide to spend your next family vacation in Greece, finding a beach that’s fun and safe for your kids is key for a relaxing time in full peace of mind.

As a mama of two who lives on Greece’s biggest island, I’ve created this with some of the top family-friendly beaches in Greece. They are safe and shallow enough for smaller kids, and some of them even offer activities geared toward older kids.

Top Family-Friendly Beaches in Greece

Elafonisi Beach, Crete

Although there is an incredible amount of family-friendly beaches in Crete, the most famous one is, undoubtedly, the pink sand beach of Elafonisi, in the western region of Chania.

This is a well-organized beach, big enough to find the right spot to spend the day and beat the crowds. Along the coast, you will find both areas with organization and solitary places (often with little shadow).

In Elafonisi, the sea is shallow and extremely clean, and the pinkish tone of the sand is one of the most attractive features in this area.

The bay is wide and safe even when it’s windy, there are a few snack bars and a couple of taverns in the area as well. Water sports are also popular in Elafonisi.

Avithos Beach, Kefalonia

Considered one of the best kid-friendly beaches in Kefalonia, Avithos Beach is a gorgeous, tranquil shore with crystalline waters and golden (almost red) sand. On the beach, the magnificent cliff backdrop adds an adventurous touch to the overall atmosphere… And kids love it!

In the area, there are enough facilities to make the beach day easy. The beach is safe and shallow, perfect for little swimmers.

There are just a few snack bars and fish taverns only a few meters from the coast, so packing a lunch won’t be necessary.

Simos Beach, Elafonisos, Peloponnese

The best-known beach on the small island of Elafonisos, in the Peloponnese, Simos Beach features waters with incredible shades of blue, impressive natural sand dunes, and a gorgeous natural landscape surrounding the area.

The beach offers a unique combination of Caribbean-like hues that make you think of a heavenly shore more than a place on Earth.

You will find different shores in the area, some of them with organization, including the possibility to rent loungers and umbrellas. Access to the beach is not close to the nearby parking area (otherwise quite spacious), and is done through a sand path.

Drinks and snacks can be purchased on the beach but the organization is, in general, quite minimal.

Plaka Beach, Naxos

Wide, and calm, with shallow turquoise waters and fine white sand, the long Plaka Beach in Naxos is one of those Greek beaches that conquer you! Personally, this is one of my favorite beaches in Greece!

The beach is really wide and offers organized areas and other more solitary spots (over here, nudism is very common). So you can choose whether to stay on your own or to rent an umbrella and spend the day in a more crowded area.

Opposite the long beachside promenade, there are different restaurants, supermarkets, and even hotels and studios, so there is no need to pack food for the day.

Santa Maria Beach, Paros

Although it is one of the most popular beaches on the island, Santa Maria is so wide that it never feels too crowded. However, if you prefer a more secluded beach with organization and facilities for families.

The main Santa Maria Beach is a famous place for windsurfing and other water sports, therefore not as good for kids since the sea can be wavy.

However, there are several coves in the area, such as the one in the picture, Mikri (or Small) Santa Maria, all of them generally known as Santa Maria, which are really idyllic.

In the area, you will find different facilities, including toilets, restaurants, snack bars, and even water activities. Renting an umbrella is also possible on these beaches.

Paleokastritsa Beach, Corfu

Paleokastritsa is one of the best family-friendly destinations in Corfu. The village boasts six different shores on the northwestern area of the island.

Most of the beaches are well-organized and offer a variety of water activities for kids and families. The popular Agios Spyridon is probably the prettiest shore in the area.

There are several restaurants, taverns, bars, and shops, so you won’t need to worry about packing a huge beach bag for the day.

Parents enjoy the facilities that also include a parking area and a taxi boat station. This is the only sandy beach in Paleokastritsa, while all the others feature small, white pebbles. For that reason, it is probably the most recommended for families.

Voidokilia Beach, Messinia, Peloponnese

Arguably one of the best beaches on the mainland, Voidokilia Beach is one of the prettiest shores in the Peloponnese.

Although there are no facilities or amenities to make the stay easier, the place can be fully enjoyed with a little organization beforehand. So, don’t forget to pack your lunch, cold drinks, and carry sunscreen for the little ones.

The bay has a magnificent shape featuring very shallow waters, often not as cold as you would expect.

The beach has a position that makes it protected from winds, so the water is always calm and virtually waveless, ideal for little kids that are learning to swim.

Kalamaki Beach, Zakynthos

Although we are used to the stunning image of Navagio Beach in Zakynthos, the best family beach on the island is Kalamaki.

Featuring a secluded atmosphere and a shallow coast, the place is safe for small children. Kalamaki is located in the southeast of the island, is a more secluded beach, but with fine golden sand.

The beach, on the southern area of the island, is close to the popular Laganas Beach (better for families with older teens and young adults) and is part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos.

This means that kids can be lucky enough to spot the protected sea turtles (Caretta-Caretta) that come to lay their eggs on this shore. Precisely for that reason, water sports are banned on this beach.

Tsampika Beach, Rhodes

Rhodes is a great island to visit with children and Tsambika is the perfect family beach too!  

Situated on the east coast of the island about 26 km from Rhodes Town, this large beach has fine golden sand, calm water, and a sandy seabed making it really suitable for families with young children. 

The facilities are really good with free parking right next to the beach. There are sunbeds and umbrellas available to rent, showers, and several beach taverns. 

For older children, there are various water sports such as parasailing and jet-skiing. Views of the beach are dominated by the Monastery of Tsambika which stands 240 meters high on a rocky bluff and is a place of pilgrimage.

Elia Beach, Mykonos

The atmosphere of Elia Beach is completely relaxing. Besides, the beach is wide enough to allow for different isolated areas. It has soft and fine golden sand and the shore is very shallow, ideal for small kids.

However, it must be said that maybe, not all families will feel 100% at ease since Elia Beach is a gay-friendly beach. I’ve visited with my kids and found it also truly family-friendly. 

Elia Beach is about 50 minutes from another great Mykonos Beach, Platys Gialos, by boat. To reach Elia Beach, you can catch the boat in Platys Gialos port as well as at the beach of Ornos, or you can jump on a bus in Mykonos Town.

This is one of the many southern beaches on Mykonos where naturism is allowed in some areas.

Santorini island is magical, inspiring, and majestic. It’s also more than just a ridiculously gorgeous island. Parents, though, are often forced to gear down since it’s been labeled “for couples only”.

So what do we do with the kids? … For couples only? There’s a lot for kids to do in Santorini… and for adults too. For instance, you can spend a day with the family outside Fira! Take a look!

Things to Do in Santorini with Kids

Discover Ancient Thera

This region lies on an elevated headland that divides Perissa from Kamari: Meso Vouna (or between mountains).

The flatness of the plateau and its height from sea level results in a phenomenal 360° panorama. A visit to Ancient Thera is a must-do if your kids love all that’s ancient. And it’s a must from the beginning.

A drive on one of the most spectacular roads on Earth, the Kamari Serpentine, with 22 hairpin switchbacks, takes your breath away (not always in a good way!).

The settlement is on the east side of Santorini and offers a very different observation point. Important ruins are the Temple of Dionysus, the Sanctuaries of Artemidoros and Apollo Karneios, The Terrace of the Festivals, and ancient graveyards that will certainly move you.

If the Kamari Serpentine is too much for your vertigo, reach Ancient Thera on foot, the hiking trail starting in Perissa takes about an hour and rewards you with spectacular views of the Aegean.

Explore Ancient Akrotiri, one of the best things to do in Santorini with kids!

Santorini’s Pompeii, if you will, lies in Akrotiri which is on the southernmost tip of the crescent-shaped island. With remains that date back to the 2nd millennium BC, the Bronze Age has left a permanent mark on this side of the Cycladic island.

The ruins are incredibly well-preserved and you can almost walk inside the two and three-story buildings that were part of the original settlement; once adorned with colorfully vibrant wall paintings and frescoes.

You’ll find pottery and clay decanters still very much intact. The remains of this advanced civilization will astonish you.

So as not to miss any important detail, we opted for a professionally guided tour of Akrotiri. It was excellent to get a well-rounded insight into the most prominent areas of the island and in a reasonable time.

Explore Fira with Kids

It’s a good idea to book a kid-friendly tour that will handle your children’s questions and curious look while exploring Santorini’s capital. Find a tour that is flexible in terms of pick-up as well as tour hours and that adapts well to you schedule.

The activity is perfect if you are spending a few days in Santorini but I also think it can show much of the island if you’re a cruise passenger. In that case, they pick you up from the port of Athinios, at the base of the Caldera, they take you to Akrotiri and show you also the wonderful village of Oia.

If you are staying in Santorini for more than a day, can I suggest you three things to do?

Try Fava!

Fava is probably the best-known dish from the island, and when it’s cooked by the book, it’s heaven. Fava has nothing to do with fava beans, it’s a dish mainly made of yellow split peas, and a must in Santorini.

Taste Santorini Wines

I’ve already talked about wines and kids in Santorini… and our experience was awesome. And third..?

Choose the Right Hotel for the Family!

As much as you can. Santorini is a treat to the senses, enjoy sunsets, tastes, experiences… and choose a ravishing hotel in Fira, Fira, such as the lovely Kalisti, (which, by the way, means beautiful in Greek; and the Kalisti honors its name!). We were lucky to manage our time quite wisely and to return to the hotel in time for some relaxing downtime. Kids included!

We all took in all those beautiful cultural images experienced during the day and enjoyed a memorable dinner overlooking the Caldera… romance does not mean kids forbidden. In a way, that’s how kids are started sometimes!

Located on the island’s west side, Galissas is a sandy beach offering a safe and clean environment for kids to enjoy. The calm and shallow waters make it ideal for young children to splash around and swim. 

Furthermore, parents can relax on sun loungers and soak up the sun while keeping an eye on their little ones. Kids can build sandcastles, play beach volleyball, or run along the shore.

Mykonos with Kids

Mykonos can be considered a bit unusual destination for families with kids because it is considered more of a party island. However, it has some fantastic beaches, fascinating museums, and a relaxed vibe that kids will certainly enjoy.

These are some of the best things I did in Mykonos with my kids… that you can do too!

Mykonos is one of Greece’s most famous islands. It belongs to the Cycladic cluster of islands and is in the center of the Aegean. Traditionally, Mykonos is known for its laid-back atmosphere, parties, discos, and fun. However, there’s a lot to do on the island, even for those who don’t go clubbing… such as kids and parents!

We chose Mykonos as a family holiday destination and had a fantastic time. We found stunning beaches and plenty of other things to see and discover.

Beaches in Mykonos for Families

Mykonos needs no introduction. It’s a gorgeous island, and its coast is dotted with fantastic beaches. The island also offers tourist attractions, even for those who don’t go clubbing anymore. There are some fascinating museums, and Greek food is delicious.

Regarding natural landscapes, the island has a beautiful rugged coast that contrasts with shallow bays and turquoise shores your kids will undoubtedly enjoy. Let’s check which are Mykonos’ best beaches if you’re visiting with kids.

Platys Gialos Beach for Kids

Platys Gialos is a wide-open bay with a small harbor from which you can board a boat and visit some stunning, more isolated beaches. The boats depart every hour to different parts of the island.

A great feature of Platys Gialos is that, thanks to the natural shape of the bay, there was no Meltemi wind hitting on us all the time.

The Meltemi is usually a blessing (and on the days the temperature was over 40°C, it would have helped), but we were happy to avoid it because it can be a pain for the kids to leave the beach just because it’s windy (Yes, the Meltemi is that strong at times).

Mykonos’ Agia Anna Beach for Children

There are two beaches by the name of Agia Anna in Mykonos. In this article, I refer to the Agia Anna, located a few meters from Platys Gialos, which you can reach on foot with a short walk.

Agia Anna is a small sandy bay, sometimes affected by the winds, but shallow and great for kids. It can be pretty crowded sometimes, so I suggest arriving early.

The beach is pretty well organized, and an excellent restaurant by the sea (Nikolas Taverna) serves great fish dishes.

Psarou Beach

Cavo Psarou is quite an exclusive, secluded beach, surrounded by luxurious hotels and a favorite of yacht owners.

But you can access the organized beach perfectly and have a good lunch in the local restaurant with great views of the shallow bay.

The secluded shore has crystal clear waters and white sand mixed with tiny, colorful pebbles. It is Stunningly beautiful. You can spend your day relaxing on a sunbed because the beach is safe and protected.

Agios Stefanos Beach

Agios Stefanos Beach is not close to the area we were staying in (Platys Gialos), but if you rent a car, it’s a good place to spend the day. The beach is near the new port of Mykonos, about 15 minutes by car from the chora (Mykonos Town).

The shore is quite popular among residents and tourists, so crowds are expected. However, it’s such an excellent point from where to enjoy the sunset that putting up with the crowds is not that hard after all.

The bay is narrow and shallow, so winds don’t bother you. Kids love it for its shallow shore, fine sand, and clear water.

The beach is well organized, and sports can also be practiced. You can choose among different restaurants or opt for a picnic on the beach, taking advantage of the local convenience store and markets.

Agios Ioannis Beach

The romantic comedy Shirley Valentine made Agios Ioannis famous. Some tourists even call it Shirley Valentine Beach. However, it takes its name from the small chapel of Saint John (Agios Ioannis) that overlooks the bay.

The beach is well-organized, and there are watersports available. Despite some rocky areas, the spot has crystal turquoise waters, making it a favorite place for snorkeling. The beach has fine sand, which makes it suitable for kids.

The beach is within walking distance from Ornos Beach. Buses to Agios Ioannis depart from the area of Fabrika in Mykonos Town.

Ornos Beach

I will add a few words about Ornos Beach here, as I’ve often seen this beach included on lists of family-friendly beaches on Mykonos. Ornos is, in fact, a very noisy beach, dotted with expensive restaurants, and loud music all day.

Young crowds gather here all day (and all night) leaving it often in rather a bad shape (litter and empty bottles are common). Not the most relaxing, and I certainly won’t recommend Ornos for families, but it’s perfect for those who want to be seen.

Elia Beach… for kids!

The atmosphere of Elia Beach is completely relaxing. Besides, the beach is wide enough to allow for different isolated areas.

Elia Beach is gay-friendly, but it’s also genuinely family-friendly. This heavenly beach is located about 50 minutes from Platys Gialos by boat. To reach Elia Beach, you can catch the boat in Platys Gialos port and Ornos Beach or jump on a bus in Mykonos Town.

This is one of the many southern beaches on Mykonos. Naturism is allowed in some areas. Personally, it’s one of my favorite beaches of all the Cyclades.

Little Venice

The quarter of Alefkandra, or Little Venice, was born in the 18th century as the island started developing its commerce and sailing activities.

The three-story houses that faced the sea were the most expensive in town and used to belong to wealthy merchants and ship captains.

The Windmills

Every house has a main entrance on the street, a back door, and a balcony facing the sea, a source of infinite legends about pirates and hidden treasures. Kids love to hear that mysterious side of Mykonos.

Being years and years old, Mykonos windmills have been fully renovated; some are even museums now, and your kids will love to visit them.

The windmills are a common sight in the Aegean Sea. For instance, you can find this typical Greek landmark on Paros, Santorini, and even Crete islands!

On Mykonos, they are no longer in use. However, they represent a vivid memory of the island’s agricultural past and a continuous reminder of the Meltemi.

The chora and the museums

Taking a walk in the center of Mykonos Town, the Chora, is certainly fun for kids. And parents! First, every alley is pedestrian, so there are no risks, and everyone can relax. It’s crowded at times but never dangerous.

Children like the colors of the doors and windows, the cobblestone streets, and the pretty views created by bougainvillea, souvenirs on sale, and colorful paintings. Besides, there are squares and museums they can also enjoy.

Nautical Museum of the Aegean

The Nautical Museum of the Aegean is in the center of town, in the trendy quarter of Matogianni. It is hosted in what used to be the house of a former ship captain. On display are ancient coins and objects related to the country’s maritime past.

Address: Enoplon Dynamenon street. The museum opens from 6 pm to 9.30 pm. On Sundays, it closes at 9.00 pm.

Lena’s House, Folklore Museum

The folklore museum of Mykonos, Lena’s House, is right next to the Nautical Museum, and the entrance is free. It’s in a beautiful house built back in the 19th century. Inside, kids will be able to learn about houses on the Greek islands in the past.

They can see how rooms used to be, the main tasks men would do in the fields and women in their homes, and which tools they would use.

A few meters from the two buildings, your children can also check the Tria Pigiada, three wells that would provide water for the inhabitants of the chora.

The young women who stopped to fill in their buckets would drink water directly from the well since the legend said this was the fastest way to get a husband!

Panagia Paraportiani

You will easily find the church of Panagia Paraportiani (well, five churches, in fact) walking past the art galleries and shops in Little Venice.

I clearly remember wanting to get the best possible pictures of the area, so I got up early and visited the neighborhood of Kastro.

It was a sunny day, very early in the morning, before cruise ships arrived on the island. Its dazzling white walls seemed to dance against the blue skies, shimmering along with the blaze of the sun.

The strong scent of incense invaded the streets, mixed with the litany of Mass, and the smell of salt from the sea. All of them are authentic snapshots of Mykonos.

Not the regularly portrayed one, not just an island for all-night-long parties. You can get that too if you want. But there is also so much more.

Where to Stay in Mykonos with Kids

We chose to stay out of the old town and near a family beach. Kids were still small, so the basic organization needed to be covered.

Just a few minutes away from the capital, Mykonos Town, we had a great time on a reasonably quiet beach, Platys Gialos (meaning “Big Beach” in Greek). The bay was shallow, and the area was perfect for kids.

We stayed at Hotel Akrogiali, it was right on the beach. The rooms were in individual bungalows surrounded by a tranquil Cycladic garden. It was a perfect location that made it easy to go down for breakfast by the sea and spend the rest of the morning playing with the kids on the sand. Our umbrella was already waiting for us!

The hotel was recently renovated. The quality of the service and the friendly staff make this hotel stand out on the island. They were extremely helpful and provided a free-of-charge airport shuttle which was super convenient for traveling with kids. They were waiting for us upon arrival, and a few minutes after, every one of us was on the beach.

I eagerly recommend Akrogiali Hotel for your holiday in Mykonos. The quality of service is flawless and it has a very fair price on a very expensive island.

Mykonos: Gay-Friendly Island

Mykonos, the cosmopolitan pearl of the Aegean, has been a gay tourism destination since the 60s. It’s a touristic sector in continuous expansion on the island, which currently counts with exclusive beaches, events, and cruise ships. On the island, there are gay-friendly hotels for every budget, pleasing a happy public to find themselves in a joyful, safe environment without being judged.

Despite Greece being a deeply traditional country, where the values of religion are pretty much alive, Mykonos is quite an exception. The gay community accounts for much of Mykonos’ striving economy and prosperity, and the local community acknowledges that.

Elia Beach is one of Mykonos’s most famous gay-friendly beaches, remaining rather low-key. We personally support beaches for everyone. Our family has always felt comfortable with sunbathing naked or couples of the same sex. But I’m aware that not all families are created equally.

It’s all up to you, of course. According to us, gay is okay. We think diversity can only enrich our lives. We understand there’s nothing wrong if our sons play with children with two dads or two moms.

Since this is an article for families planning a holiday on Mykonos, parents should exercise their judgment on deciding whether to take their kids to beaches such as Paraga or Super Paradise.

Due its interesting landscapes, beautiful towns and villages, and pristine beaches, Andros is the perfect spot for a family vacation.

But perhaps you might wonder what activities are best to do with kids. So, here is a list of great child-friendly activities and things to do in Andros with kids for your next summer vacation. 

Andros with Kids!

Andros is part of the most famous Greek island group, the Cyclades. It is the northernmost within the group, and although it’s not as popular as other Cycladic islands, it features fascinating landscapes, important historical and cultural sites, beautiful island architecture, and stunning beaches.

What makes Andros interesting is its rocky coastline and rich nature. Specifically, most Aegean islands are known for their dry, rocky, and harsh terrain. But Andros has lush green spaces with springs and waterfalls.

Also, Andros has three unique towns with medieval castles, ancient monuments, and a cosmopolitan, classy, and sophisticated ambiance.

Lastly, Andros features local taverns with delicious, authentic seafood dishes that can satisfy everyone’s tastes and preferences. 

Getting to Andros

Andros is easily accessible by a direct ferry boat from the port of Rafina, in Athens, the island can even be an excellent destination for a weekend away with kids or even an easy trip (less than 2 hours!)

Keep in mind that there are no ferry connections between the main port of Athens, Piraeus, and Gavrios, the main port in Andros, so all departures are from Rafina.

Rafina is a port located about 35 minutes from Athens International Airport and there are frequent bus connections from the terminal to the port.

Andros doesn’t have an airport, so ferries remain the only way to get there. Depending on the weather conditions (and the type of vessel you choose for the journey), the ride lasts from 1 to 2 hours. So it’s pretty close to the capital.

St. Peter’s Beach 

St. Peter’s Beach, or Agios Petros, is located in the village of the same name, just 3km away from the port town Gavrio.

This is a well-organized beach with sunbeds and umbrellas, a lifeguard, water sports, a pleasant bar with music, beach service, and a baby changing area. 

Furthermore, St. Peter’s features soft golden sand and pristine turquoise waters, reminding of a tropical Caribbean beach. Also, since this is a blue-flag beach, it is an ideal and safe spot for kids to swim and explore the area. 

Tis Grias To Pidima Beach

Pidima is Andros’ most visited and photographed beach. Located on a sandy cove in the island’s southeastern part, it’s within unspoiled nature and towering cliffs.

Also, as it is about 23 km away from the island’s capital, access to it is either by boat or taxi.

The beach doesn’t have tourist amenities or umbrellas and sunbeds. So if you plan to lounge on the golden, soft sand and swim in the emerald waters, be sure to go prepared.

…And expect to experience a fun and exciting adventure that your kids will surely love. 

Andros’ Capital, Chora

Andros’s capital Chora is one of the most sophisticated and classy in the Cyclades. It features well-preserved neoclassical buildings, vibrant and colorful squares, green open spaces, and spectacular sea views.

Also, Chora has many elegant cafes and restaurants to try delicious and refreshing local dishes and drinks.

A must-visit spot at Chora is the Riva square which features an enormous bronze statue honoring the sailors who lost their lives to the sea.

Furthermore, a stone bridge connects the peninsula with a tiny islet at the square’s edge.

On top of the tiny islet island, you will find an ancient medieval fort, also known as Kato Kastro, offering breathtaking views of the sea and the famous Tourlitis lighthouse, another spot that kids love to explore.

Kato Kastro

Locally known as Kato Kastro or Lower Castle, the ruins of this ancient fortress stand on the tip of a small peninsula and an islet on the eastern coast of the island, near Andros’ Chora.

Considered a strategic position, the site would offer natural protection as it was surrounded by the sea on three sides with only its western side facing the island.

The castle got its name in contrast with the other major castle on the island, the Castle of Faneromeni, also called Upper Castle (or Ano Kastro in Greek).

Just like many other Greek islands, Andros fell under Venetian domination back in the 1200s. The Republic of Venice captured the island in 1207 and the conquerors built three different fortresses to protect the island, the Lower Castle, the Upper Castle, and Makrotantalo, a fortified outpost.

The Lower Castle or Kato Kastro is the most impressive of all due to its dramatic and scenic position by the sea which makes it a place that kids love to explore in Andros!

Natural Springs

On the way from Chora to the Stavropeda area, you will find the picturesque village of Menites, which is home to the Springs of Dionysus.

This region in Andros is associated with the Greek god Dionysus, and recently not too far from the springs, excavations have unearthed the remains of an ancient temple.

In ancient times, people believed that the lion head statues of the springs used to flow wine from the temple. Of course, that is only a legend, but today the mineral water is fresh and has therapeutic properties.

Achla River Trekking

One more fun thing to do in Andros with the children (kids love this activity) is to go trekking up the Achla River, cross the bridge over it, and then, slowly make your way up the river.

Along the way, you will discover small streamlets and a huge variety of green vegetation, bushes, and trees. At the end of the trail, you will be rewarded with the beautiful Gerolimni Waterfall where you can enjoy a refreshing swim or even a picnic! >>> This is a perfect tour to enjoy a similar activity in the same area!

Andros Trails

As already mentioned, Andros has diverse terrain landscapes, beautiful nature, and exciting cultural and historical sites.

A great way to explore all these features is by hiking. Of course, hiking with younger kids might be a challenge, but if you are traveling with your teens, then it is an excellent family activity. 

Andros has a well-organized network of paths throughout the island, from medium difficulty to easy.

The paths can lead you to natural springs, waterfalls, ancient ruins like Agios Petros Tower, and the Geometric Settlement at Zagora.

Cyclades Olive Museum

Olives and olive oil are what distinguish Greece’s cuisine. So, visiting the Cycladic Olive Museum is an excellent way to understand the country’s culture and history.

Located in the mountainous village of Ano Pitrofos, very close to Menites, the museum is private and housed in a 19th-century olive extraction facility.

The museum is an excellent spot to discover the island’s traditional architectural elements like arches and domes, as well as learn about the locals’ lifestyle in the old days by experiencing the traditional oil production method of Andros.

Besides, the museum also features a pretty guesthouse, making it a great place to stay in Andros.

Batsi’s Promenade

Until the 1960s, Batsi was a picturesque fishing village used as a set for many famous classic Greek movies. But today, it transformed into a cosmopolitan harbor with everything you might need, including hotels, restaurants, shops, bars, and cafes.

Although it is a relatively small town, it offers exquisite scenery and is safe for strolling around with kids.

The place also has lovely beaches to lounge on all day long or sit by the marina to enjoy a refreshing drink or ice cream.

Andros is undoubtedly an excellent choice for family vacations offering various kid-friendly activities while experiencing Greece’s beauty, historical and cultural importance, and carefree and relaxing island lifestyle.

Sifnos is a wonderful Greek island home to a variety of impressive beaches, some of them quite popular for the pristine waters and golden sand, the island is a perfect family vacation destination with interesting attractions for everyone.

Sifnos boasts a mild climate most of the year, with long, dry summers, and pleasant temperatures from the end of May until the end of September.

This secluded, long beach can only be reached on foot, and the hike is relatively easy to enjoy with your kids. Fikiada is located in the south of Sifnos.
