Sifnos is an island rich in history and with a plethora of things to do. Known for its traditions, its gastronomy, and its whitewashed churches and monasteries perched on top of a uniquely rugged landscape, there is still more on the island to discover.

The beaches in Sifnos, often cataloged among the top shores in Greece, are arguably the main ingredient of any summer vacation on the island. Often overlooked and forgotten, the island is a great travel destination in any Greece itinerary.

Beaches in Sifnos, Greece

In no particular order, these are the beaches you should check out when spending time in Sifnos…

Vathi Beach

Sandy beach with shallow waters. There’s some organization and it’s possible to get there by boat too.

The quietness of the village of Vathi (also spelled Vathy) combines with the same relaxed atmosphere of its beach. Since cars do not have access to the area and are not allowed in the village, it’s still quite a tranquil place to spend the day by the sea.

Vathi is a sheltered harbor, as a matter of fact, until recent times, the only way to get there was by boat but now you can also do so by driving from the capital of the island, Apollonia.

If you’re traveling the island without a rental car, you can jump on a bus at the port of Kamares or in Apollonia, and reach Vathi within minutes.

The beach, which is more than one kilometer long, offers enough secluded spots if you’re into naturism. The place is ideal for families with kids as the sea is safe, protected from winds and waves, and very shallow.

On the beach, there are tavernas and traditional restaurants where it’s possible to have a great Sifnian meal any hour of the day.

While spending the day in Vathi, don’t forget to check the picturesque whitewashed Church of the Taxiarchis (the Archangel) located exactly where the boat from Kamares docks.

Platys Gialos

Although not the best beach on the island, rather touristic and often crowded, Platys Gialos is a great choice if you want to spend a day at the beach in Sifnos and you’re staying in the nearby area.

The sand is golden under the sun’s rays and the waters are crystal clear. In the area, it’s possible to practice different water sports.

There’s a direct road that from Apollonia takes you directly there (about 10 minutes by car). If instead, you’re getting to Platys Gialos from Kamares, expect to drive for about 20 minutes.

Platys Gialos is a favorite beach among Greek holidaymakers who love the long line of tavernas by the beach serving delicious local food. the area is also known for an open-air theater located nearby.

From this beach, it’s possible to take different hiking trails that take you to Vathi and other settlements on the island.

Among the things to do in Platys Gialos, it’s a good idea to take some time out and walk for about 1.5 km to visit one of Sifnos’ best-preserved towers.

Known as the White Tower (Aspros Pyrgos), it is one of the over 70 fryktories or ancient beacon towers that you can bump into on the island. The White Tower dates from the 6th century BC and it’s 5.5 meters high.

Kamares

Popular and well-organized, sandy, quite safe, and with beautiful clear waters.

Kamares, the main port of Sifnos and the first place you’ll set foot on the island, is a pristine sandy bay, long and quite wide, with spectacular turquoise waters Kamares, and the nearby area of Agia Marina, is probably the most popular place to stay in Sifnos.

There is plenty of accommodation as well as restaurants, bars, and some night entertainment. All these reasons make the place quite crowded during most of the summer.

Since this is the most important coastal center on the island, you’re likely to find the beach quite overcrowded, so it’s always a good idea to head there quite early in the morning to find the perfect spot to spend the day.

Then Kamares is the perfect place to be at this hour of the day. Due to the orientation to the west, it’s in Kamares where you can get the best sunset pictures on Sifnos Island.

Faros Beach

Faros, which was Sifnos’ main port until 1887, is a gorgeous sheltered port with stunningly beautiful blue waters and a spacious sand beach.

The word faros in Greek stands for lighthouse. The beach receives its name after an ancient tower in the area.

The beach has certainly fans that get to the area every year and who consider it to be one of the best corners in Sifnos.

Clam and pristine waters, soft fine sand, tamarisk trees offering nature shelter, and a few tavernas on the waterfront make this place the utmost example of Greek summer.

If you also adore this settlement, you’ll be happy to learn that there are a few rooms and studios to let, as well as good vacation homes where you can spend your vacation.

Right next to Faros, no more than 3 minutes away on foot, you can discover the small Glyfo Beach featuring huge tamarisk trees offering natural shade for your stay.

From Glyfo, different paths start to reach the beaches of Apokoftou and Chrysopigi.

Fasolou Beach

Fasolou is located towards the east of Faros, it’s a tiny settlement with a picturesque beach well-protected from winds and waves.

At the end of the beach, there’s an imposing peninsula that hosts the picturesque white monastery of Timios Stavros. A hiking trail in the area leads directly to Kastro, the former capital of Sifnos.

Apokofto Beach (Chrisopigi Beach)

Paradisiac bay with a transparent sea, with both sand and pebbles. Parking is available and there are places to eat.

Also known as Chrisopigi Beach since it’s quite close also to Sifnos’ famous Chrisopigi Monastery, Apokofto beach is located est of Faros Beach.

If you reach the area from Faros on foot, you’ll be able to discover the magnificent hidden coves along the coastline.

Instead, those driving from Apollonia can marvel at the spectacular scenery that unfolds right in front of them. The ride is worth more than one stop if you love taking panoramic pictures.

The bay is not deep but awesome for snorkeling and features a mixture of sand and colorful pebbles that make the underwater experience quite unforgettable.

Although the beach is partially organized, you can easily find a shady spot under the many trees.

The beach is not crowded with allows for a relaxing experience. Most visitors to the area only focus on the magnificent monastery (they’re not to blame!) and ignore the spectacular beach of Apokofto.

If you also want to visit Chrisopigi, it’s located at the end of an imposing headland towards the south of the beach.

Several coves and unknown small pebble beaches populate the area, walk along the coast and discover them!

Herronisos

Small sandy beach, shallow, and crystal clear with some organization.

Located on the northern coast of Sifnos, Herronisos is about 15 km from Sifnos’ capital, Apollonia. The settlement is a tiny fishing village with just a few shops and places where you can rent a room.

Although many don’t consider this corner of the island worth a visit, I believe that the peace and quietness of the area are quite difficult to find anywhere else on Sifnos.

The beach is fairly small, sandy, and with a very familiar atmosphere.

If you’re exploring the area on a day trip from the more important villages of Kamares or Apollonia, it’s a good idea to set some hours aside and visit Vroulida Beach, just minutes by car from Herronisos.

Vroulidia

Among the least visited but most spectacular shores on Sifnos, Vroulidia can be a little hard to visit but it’s definitely worth the effort. The hike down to the beach is not as hard as the way up after a day of swimming!

The crystalline sea bathes an extensive bay of white small pebbles.

However, if you don’t really love walking on pebbles, or left your swimming shoes back home, two wooden piers will make it easier for you to get in the sea. It’s a relatively calm bay, but better avoided on windy days.

There are also two tavernas serving fresh fish, ideal for a quick lunch or cold drinks.

Panagia Poulati (Dialiskari Beach)

Wild and secluded beach, accessible via hiking path, no organized facilities, rocky bottom.

Located at the end of a lonely but quite brief hiking trail that starts near the village of Artemonas, this is a small beach, quite secluded (not everybody visits this part of the island), featuring amazing turquoise waters, with shallow but quite rocky bottom, which makes it an interesting place for snorkeling.

The small bay, surrounded by breathtaking cliffs that plunge into the sea, offers no organized structures nearby, therefore you will need to pack snacks and drinks for the day.

Overlooking the beach, you can visit the small church of Panagia Poulati, which gives name to the area and was built back in 1870.

This quintessential Cycladic church is the focal point of the landscape, featuring contrasting whitewashed walls, and a typical blue dome.

In summer, it’s also possible to reach Sifnos from the Port of Lavrio, close to Athens.

You can also travel to Sifnos from nearby islands such as Paros, Milos, Kimolos, Serifos, and Santorini among others.

Food in Sifnos

Sifnos is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt islands in Greece. From pristine beaches and picturesque villages to scenic drives and stunning traditional architecture, Sifnos has all those ingredients that are necessary for a perfect Greek summer vacation.

Who Was Nikolaos Tselementes?

Sifnos is the birthplace of Nikolaos Tselementes, a Greek chef who’s known for changing Greek cooking forever.

Tselementes published the first Greek cookbook back in 1932. This cookbook was such a huge success that it found its way to each and every household in Greece and changed the country’s cooking mentality once and for all.

Tselementes was responsible for introducing Western tastes to Greece’s thus far Eastern Cuisine. In other words, he is responsible for Greek Cuisine as we know it today, this fascinating mixture of Western and Eastern flavors.

Evidently, locals in Sifnos are really proud of Tselementes, and for a good reason.

This is why the island continues the great chef’s legacy by keeping food standards at the highest level and by constantly experimenting with new tastes, but without ever turning its back on the core of local gastronomy, which comprises no other than the island’s century-old, hassle-free recipes. 

Festival of Cycladic Gastronomy

Moreover, the people of Sifnos pay homage to Nikolaos Tselementes by organizing an annual culinary event, the much-loved Festival of Cycladic Gastronomy.

The latter takes place every September and it’s a unique feast where visitors can try exquisite dishes from all the Cyclades Islands, wash them down with local wine, and dance to traditional music in the company of locals. 

Top 5 Things to Eat in Sifnos

In no particular order, these are some delicious dishes you should try in Sifnos to taste the most authentic local gastronomy!

Revithada

The island’s signature dish is revithada or chickpea stew. There’s a dispute over which island, Sifnos or Paros, serves the best revithada version. Either way, revithada is a hearty, must-try dish that brings legume dishes to a whole new level. 

Slow-cooked to perfection in a clay pot for an entire night to ensure that chickpeas are incredibly tender, revithada is traditionally prepared on a Saturday night so that locals can enjoy it during their Sunday lunch.

Moreover, revithada is the main dish served at traditional festivals that take place in Sifnos throughout the year, especially during the summer months.

The best place to try revithada in Sifnos: Simos Restaurant in Kamares. 

Revithokeftedes

Another chickpea-based dish not to be missed in Sifnos is revithokeftedes or fried chickpea balls.

Revithokeftedes are usually served as a meze dish or starter but they can definitely be enjoyed as a main alongside some salad or freshly cut French fries.

Revithokeftedes are always meat-free but they may contain cheese sometimes.

The best place to try revithokeftedes in Sifnos: Mosaico Restaurant in Artemonas. 

Mastelo 

Second only to revithada in popularity, mastelo is the island’s typical meat-based dish. It consists of lamb or goat’s meat, washed in red wine, and doused in dill. It’s then slow-cooked inside a clay pot also called mastelo. 

It should be noted here that, apart from all its other charms, Sifnos is also renowned for its rich pottery tradition. This is why most of Sifno’s traditional recipes are prepared in special clay pots, which are handmade in Sifnos for generations.

There are a handful of pottery workshops scattered across the island, selling handmade pots, tools and decorative items made of clay. 

Mastelo was once a special dish reserved for a special day: Easter Sunday. However, it’s now easy to try mastelo at the island’s restaurants all year round. 

The best place to try mastelo in Sifnos: Meropi Restaurant in Kamares. 

Local Cheese from Sifnos

Sifnos produces some of the best cheese in the Cyclades. Cheese in Sifnos is made according to traditional methods and with the freshest ingredients.

In this respect, it’s very much like the cheese produced in many parts of Greece and other Mediterranean countries such as Italy, especially as far as Apulian Cuisine is concerned. 

The three main types of cheese produced in Sifnos are chloromanoura, gilomeni manoura, and xinomizithra. Depending on the producer, local cheese can be spread-like or firm.

That said, there aren’t any huge differences in taste, while it’s absolutely certain that cheese in Sifnos is always made of fresh local milk.

The best place to try local cheese in Sifnos: Any traditional restaurant on the island.

Kaparosalata

Kaparosalata or capers salad is a staple starter dish in Sifnos. Its main ingredients – capers and onions – are cooked together until they reach a chutney-like texture with a very distinct, sweet and sour taste.

Although Kaparosalata is a very popular spread in Sifnos, some people find its flavor too intense for their taste buds. 

The best place to try kaparosalata in Sifnos: Tsikali Restaurant in Vathi.

Bonus: Dessert

Of course, no culinary trip is complete without dessert. The typical dessert in Sifnos is melopita, a traditional sweet that’s made of local cheese and honey.

In essence, melopita is the island’s take on cheesecake. Furthermore, Sifnos produces fresh and delicious cookies that come in many flavors.

Hike to Fikiada Beach

This secluded, long beach can only be reached on foot, and the hike is relatively easy to enjoy with your kids. Fikiada is located in the south of Sifnos.

Once there, you can check out the small chapel of Agios Giorgos Kontos, located on the edge of the bay. Don’t forget to check out the quiet, small sandy bay located between the little church and the main beach of Fikiada.

Explore the Capital, Apollonia

The gorgeous Apollonia is the island’s capital, a whitewashed Cycladic settlement built on the slope of three relatively low hills.

Not only is Apollonia a very picturesque settlement to visit, but it is also the right place to visit at night for food, drinks, and even music.

This is also one of the places to get those typical souvenirs we all love buying in Greece!

Staying in Apollonia is a good idea if you don’t want direct access to the beach every morning but are keen on exploring the island and walking some of its fantastic hiking trails.

When exploring Apollonia, don’t miss a stop at the Folklore and Pop Art Museum in the village’s main square.

This is a great place to start learning about Sifnos’ pottery and other crafts and jobs typical of life on the Cyclades.

The museum also exhibits interesting objects of domestic use, agricultural tools, and elements used for embroidery and textile works.

Walk from Apollonia to the village of Artemonas

A well-marked road will take you from Apollonia to Artemonas; it is a pleasant walk of about half an hour (1.6 kilometers), although you can also do it by bike or car (there is a public parking spot in the village, not far from the church of Agios Konstantinos and Agia Eleni.

Artemonas is another picturesque settlement named after the Greek goddess Artemis (yes, just the same as Apollonia gets its name from God Apollo).

This is the second most important village on the island, and it includes some other small villages such as Herronissos (also spelled Cherronissos), Agia Marina, and Troulaki.

From Artemonas, you can have an outstanding view of some windmills on the island.

Although some of them have been turned into fancy accommodations, they are silent witnesses of the agricultural character Sifnos used to have.

Artemonas is an excellent place for an afternoon walk after a day at the beach (for instance, the nearby Herronissos). 

Don’t miss a relaxed stroll along the narrow alleys, where you can discover gorgeous mansions with blossomed gardens that tell us about this island’s thriving economic past.

Eat at the Port of Kamares

As your ferry approaches the island’s coast, Kamares will be the first place you see of Sifnos.

Home to the main port on Sifnos, Kamares is a picturesque village with a broad golden sand bay lined up with great fish taverns and other souvenir shops.

Do not miss the quintessentially Greek experience of having a delicious fish platter right by the sea when you visit Kamares.

Here, you can visit some of the last remaining pottery artisans and purchase some interesting souvenirs to take home.

Discover Local Crafts

The trademark of Sifnos, pottery has always been one of the island’s most essential products, as its soil has always been rich in high-quality clay. 

Pottery has been produced in Sifnos for centuries and is known worldwide for its refined qualities. 

The best places to learn, purchase, and even learn to work with clay are Apollonia, the village of Vathi, and the area of Kamares, yet there are producers all over the island.

And if you’d like to buy a traditional piece of pottery from Sifnos, make space in your luggage* for a gastra, a typical clay pot that locals use to prepare their chickpea stews. The ones used for roast meat are known as tsikalia.

Once all the ingredients are inside the gastra, they are often sealed with bread dough and put to cook overnight in a wood oven on a Saturday night and then shared with the family for Sunday lunch.

However, you can buy other ceramic objects, including cups, plates, and stamnes (water pitchers). And not everything is about ceramics. Purchasing handmade textiles, embroideries, straw hats, or bags is also possible.

*You don’t really need to make space in your bag, though. Many local artisans ship their products abroad for an affordable fee.

One of the main reasons why many people visit Sifnos is the beautiful collection of churches and monasteries scattered around the island, many in breathtaking locations, perfect for laconic pictures… in fact, photographers love Sifnos!

Arguably, the most famous picture of Sifnos, which you have probably already seen hundreds of times, is the Church of Seven Martyrs, a famous chapel and trendy place among photographers in the village of Kastro.

Situated on top of a rocky islet with the sea as its background, this is another traditionally Cycladic building with a typical blue dome, which you’ve already seen on many other islands of the Aegean.

The most curious trait of this church is that the islet on which it has been built is linked to the main island by stairs.

Another religious building not to miss is the Monastery of Panagia Chrisopigi. This gorgeous Cycladic church stands atop a rock, offering incredible views over the sea and a perfect spot to witness the sunset.

Finally, at 690 meters above the sea, the highest peak on the island is home to the whitewashed Monastery of Prophet Elias, a beautiful complex with protective walls and remarkable underground cells and corridors.

This church is quite old, dating back to the sixteenth century, and it’s a popular place in Sifnos as it is considered a miraculous temple.

If you are interested in religious art, head to the village of Exambella, where you can also visit the small Ecclesiastical Museum in the Monastery of Panagia Vrysiani.

Explore the Village of Vathy

One of the most beautiful settlements on the island, Vathy (or Vathi), is the perfect place to spend a whole day. It is a quiet village by the sea with a gorgeous and quiet beach perfect for families.

Right by the small harbor of Vathy and along its wide beach, you will find delicious taverns and some good rooms and studios for those who want a relaxing stay. 

Also, there are several small ceramic studios and a few souvenir shops.

If you don’t have a car to drive from Apollonia (a pleasant 15-minute ride), you can board a boat from Kamares. 

Remember that driving in the village is impossible, so you must park your car, head to the beach, and move around on foot.

Visit the Fishing Village of Herronissos

Another great place for a day out is Herronissos, a tiny seaside settlement and fishing village you don’t want to miss.

The village’s most important feature is, in fact, the beach, considered one of the most beautiful shores on the island.

The attractive sand beach has trees for natural shade and crystal clear water, perfect for diving and small kids.

Check out Kastro, the Former Capital

The island’s former capital, Kastro, gets its name from the word castle.

In fact, this is where the island’s main settlement was built back in the fifteenth century. 

Today, the village develops along the narrow alleys of the former Frankish fortification, featuring gorgeous little houses, small patios, and incredible ancient churches and aristocratic mansions, some of which are now rental homes and villas.

Also, in Kastro, you can see the Archaeological Museum of Sifnos, located inside a beautiful medieval building. Here, you can check out findings from archaeological sites around the island.

The Archaeological Site of Agios Andreas stands at the top of a hill between Vathi and Apollonia.

Archaeologists unearthed an ancient Mycenaean settlement here. The old citadel on the top of the hill can still be admired, and it is considered one of the best examples of Mycenaean fortifications in Greece.

Discover the Old Settlement of Faros

About 7 kilometers from Apollonia, Faros is another gorgeous place you can check out on the island.

You can combine a few hours on the beach and spend some time exploring the traditional whitewashed homes along the small alleys of the village.

Other than the main beach of Faros, you can also check out Fasolou Beach and Glyfos Beach (both described here). Faros gets its name from the lighthouse located on the small harbor.

Visit the Ancient Towers

One of the main reasons people venture along the island’s trails is to discover the Ancient Towers.

This old network of watchtowers is believed to have been an ancient communication system used by the former settlers to be alert and defend the island in case of sieges and pirate attacks.

These round towers had been strategically built in several locations on the island, and the roof would be ignited in case of attack, alerting the next tower, which would also light a fire (a bit like you’ve seen in the Lord of the Rings, right?).

Today, there are remains of more than fifty ancient towers in different areas on the island, built around the fifth century BC, although some might be older. Aspros Pyrgos, or White Tower, is the best-known tower among the best-preserved ones.

Top 5 Beaches in Sifnos

No visit to Greece can lack a few days lazily spent at the beach, even less so if you visit the Greek Islands. There are some beautiful, pristine beaches you can visit. These are the top five beaches you must see in Sifnos.

Platis Gialos Beach

Platis Gialos or Platys Gialos is a favorite beach among Greek holidaymakers who love the long line of tavernas by the beach.

This area in Sifnos is also known for an ancient open-air theater nearby. It’s possible to take different hiking trails from this beach to Vathy Beach and other picturesque settlements on the island.

The sand is golden under the sun’s rays and crystal clear waters. In the area, you can also practice different water sports. Although this might not be the best beach on the island, it is certainly popular among all visitors.

Fasolou Beach

Fasolou is located towards the east of the more popular Faros Beach.

It’s a tiny settlement with a picturesque beach well-protected from winds and waves.

At the beach’s end, an imposing peninsula hosts the picturesque white monastery of Timios Stavros. A hiking trail in the area leads directly to Kastro, the former capital of Sifnos.

Faros Beach

Faros, which was Sifnos” main port until 1887, is a gorgeous sheltered port with stunningly beautiful blue waters and a spacious sand beach.

The beach is considered one of the best corners in Sifnos. It has calm and pristine waters, soft fine sand, tamarisk trees offering nature shelter, and a few tavernas on the waterfront.

Kamares

Kamares is the main port on the island. It is a pristine sandy bay that is long and quite wide and has spectacular turquoise waters.The area known as Agia Marina is probably the most popular place to stay in Sifnos and enjoy this beach.

There is plenty of accommodation, restaurants, bars, and some night entertainment here. All these reasons make the place quite crowded during most of the summer.

Vathy

This is one of the most relaxing places to stay on the island… why? Since cars do not have access to the area and are not allowed in the village, the beach is a quiet place to spend the day by the sea.

What to Eat in Sifnos

More than where to eat, you should be focusing on what to eat in Sifnos! Home to delicious cuisine, the island is heaven for foodies! Sifnos has a long culinary tradition that’s famous all over Greece. 

Nikolaos Tselementes, a renowned Greek chef who published the first Greek cookbook in 1932, was born on the island. He is considered the father of Greek Cuisine, which is a fascinating mixture of Western and Eastern flavors. 

Today, the island continues the great chef’s legacy by maintaining the highest food standards, experimenting with new tastes while maintaining the core of local gastronomy, an essential key to preserving the island’s century-old recipes. 

The island’s signature dish is revithada, or chickpea stew. It is slow-cooked to perfection in a clay pot for an entire night in a wood oven. Long hours under slow fire ensure that the chickpeas are incredibly tender and flavorful.

Revithokeftedes, or fried chickpea balls, are also famous on Sifnos. They are usually served as a meze dish or starter, but they can definitely be enjoyed as a main alongside some salad.

Also popular among locals is mastelo, the island’s typical meat-based dish made of lamb or goat’s meat, washed in red wine, and doused in dill. It’s then slow-cooked inside a clay pot called mastelo or tsikalia. 

The three main types of cheese produced in Sifnos are chloromanoura, gilomeni manoura, and xinomizithra. Depending on the producer, local cheese can be spread-like or firm.

• Iliovasilema Sto Troullaki: Located in Troulaki (in Artemonas), they serve typical dishes and offer incredible sea views. Go when the sun is about to set. More info on their website.

Sifnos at Night

The island is not known for its nightlife but rather because of its elegant and quiet atmosphere. For more options and venues to discover, head to Apollonia, the island’s capital. A few clubs are open until very early in the morning.

However, you can also enjoy a drink at the beach of Platis Gialos or in Kamares. Kastro’s open-air lounges have a unique vibe and atmosphere, and Artemonas offers a few surprises for night owls.

How to Get to Sifnos?

If you book a ticket on a high-speed boat, the trip can be pretty short (a bit more than two hours). The traveling time on regular ferries is about five hours.

How to Move Around in Sifnos?

Once you’ve reached Kamares, you can take the public bus to Apollonia and Artemonas; there are hourly buses with an increased frequency during the hot season. 

You still need to take the same bus to reach other destinations, but you must change the bus once you arrive at the island’s capital.
