The Cyclades, a group of Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, are Mediterranean destinations, super popular in summer, that offer an incredible mix of beaches, history, culture, and beautiful landscapes.

If you’re planning to spend a week in Greece and are thinking of visiting the islands, this itinerary will take you through three of its most popular islands: Santorini, Paros, and Mykonos.

These islands are a must-see and offer excellent entertainment for young travelers and a dose of romantic views for couples. This super classic itinerary is perfect if you’re in the mood for nightlife ad beaches, but also if you enjoy exploring ancient ruins and discovering the excellent culinary delights of the country.

Day 1: Arrival in Santorini

Begin your Greek island adventure in Santorini, arguably the most iconic island in the Cyclades.

Morning
Arrive in Santorini and check into your hotel. I always suggest to stay in Fira so that youre in the center of the island, and moving around is easier whether you rent a car or you prefer taxi or buses.

With its caldera views and cliffs, Fira will offer an amazing welcome to the island.

Afternoon
Head to the northern tip of the island (buses leave from Fira’s public bus station) and take your first stroll through Oia, one of the most picturesque towns in Greece. Its narrow, cobbled streets are lined with beautiful boutiques, art galleries, and cafes.

Don’t miss the chance to witness the famous Santorini sunset as the sun dips into the Aegean. My suggestion is to head to the ruins of the ancient Oia castle to find a spot for one of the most popular moments on the island. The place gets overcrowded fast, so get there at least 2 hours before the sun sets!

Evening
Enjoy a meal at one of Oia’s cliffside restaurants with a panoramic view of the caldera. Make sure to sample some of Santorini’s local delicacies, such as fava puree or freshly grilled seafood.

Keep in mind that when dining in Oia you will also be paying for the views, expect higher price tags on the menu. Also consider booking in advance.

Day 2: Santorini’s Ancient Sites and Beaches

Morning
Start early and head to the south of the island to visit the archaeological site of Akrotiri, an ancient Minoan city that was buried by the impressive volcanic eruption that for ever changed the landscape in Santorini.

Devote one to two hours to walk through the site to get a a glimpse into life during the Bronze Age and learn about one of the most advanced ancient civilizations in Europe.

Afternoon
After soaking up some history, make your way to one of Santorini’s unique beaches. The striking Red Beach, just a short walk from the archaeological site, is a unique beach made of red volcanic cliffs that contrast with turquoise crystal-clear water.

Some hiking is required to get to the beach, so if you prefer a more quite activity, I suggest driving to the black sand beach of Perissa, about 15 minutes by car from Akrotiri.

Evening
For a relaxed evening, enjoy dinner at a seaside taverna with a view of the volcano in Fira. Savor local dishes such as tomato fritters or grilled octopus, paired with a glass of Assyrtiko, Santorini’s famous white wine.

Day 3: Santorini to Paros

On Day 3, leave Santorini behind and take a ferry to Paros, a popular summer destination for Greek youth and foreigners. The beautiful whitewashed island is the quintessential image of the Cyclades, featuring towns with characteristic blue-domed churches and cobble alleys with colorful flowers… a postcard-like picture!

Morning
Arrive in Paros and check into your accommodation. The island is full of traditional Cycladic charm, with beautiful whitewashed houses, narrow streets, and peaceful beaches.

My suggestion is to stay in Parikia so as to remain close to the departure point and enjoy the best of the capital. Over here, you will find endless accommodation options, but also car rental offices, banks, pharmacies, supermarkets, souvenir stores, restaurants, and bars.

Afternoon
Begin your exploration of Paros in Parikia, the island’s capital. Stroll through its old town and visit the Panagia Ekatontapiliani, a beautiful Byzantine church that’s the biggest on the island.

Afterward, take a walk along the harbor and enjoy the relaxed vibe of the town.

Evening
If you enjoy romantic views and want to soak the best of Paros, then heading to Naoussa for dinner is an excellent idea. You can get there by bus or taxi, although I suggest renting a car to make the most of your short stay on the island.

This picturesque fishing village is known for its seafood restaurants and laid-back nightlife. Enjoy dinner by the harbor and watch the boats come in.

Day 4: Paros Villages and Beaches

Paros offers plenty of opportunities to explore its scenic villages and beautiful beaches.

Morning
If you’ve rented a scooter or car, it will be easy to discover Paros’ inland villages. Visit Lefkes, a traditional hilltop village, once capital of the island.

Lefkes has a magnificent church, cobblestone streets, traditional homes, and stunning views overlooking the sea. Then head to Marpissa, another lovely whitewashed village on the island.

Afternoon
Spend the afternoon relaxing on one of Paros’ beautiful beaches. Kolymbithres Beach, with its unique granite rock formations, is a must-see. If you’re after quiet sunbathing or long swimming hours, then head Golden Beach. Catching the sunset from this beach witll be a wonderful experience.

Evening
For a tranquil evening, have dinner at a taverna in Parikia, enjoying local specialties like grilled octopus and a glass of Parian wine. After dinner, go for an ice cream.

Since souvenir will be cheaper in Paros than on Santoriny or Mykonos, you should certainly go souvenir shopping on this island!

Day 5: Paros to Mykonos

After soaking in the serenity of Paros, hop on a ferry to Mykonos, the island that blends glamour with tradition. Mykonos is the liveliest spot in the Cyclades, home to dozens of beach bars, discos, and club that attract young crowds from all over the world year after year.

Not interested in nightlife? Worry not! You will find that there’s a lot more to Mykonos than dancing until the next day!

Morning
Arrive in Mykonos, check into your hotel, and start your exploration of the island’s charming town. Mykonos is famous for its lively atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and vibrant nightlife.

I suggest staying in town for a short stay in Mykonos like this one. If you plan to stay several days, love the beaches, or are not interested in nightlife, Platys Gialos or Ornos can be better places to stay.

Afternoon
Spend your afternoon wandering through the narrow streets of Mykonos Town (Chora). Explore its boutique-lined alleys, visit the iconic windmills, and stroll through Little Venice, a picturesque area where the buildings seem to sit right on the water.

If you have time, head to the whiewashed Panagia Paraportiana church for stunning photos, it’s just a few steps from Little Venice’s waterfront.

Once you’ve visited the church, go back to the shore, pick a waterfront cafe in the area, and enjoy the sunset views, it is one of the most iconic things to do in Mykonos!

Evening
As night falls, head to one of Mykonos’ restaurants for dinner. You’ll find plenty of lively spots offering everything from Mediterranean delicacies to international cuisine.

You can end your night dancing in the seaside bars close to Mykonos Chora, or you can head back to the hotel early, ready for a second day of interesting excursions.

Day 6: Mykonos Beaches and Delos Island

No trip to Mykonos is complete without a visit to its beaches and the nearby archaeological treasure of Delos.

Morning
Start your day with some beach time. Psarou Beach offers a luxurious atmosphere with crystal-clear waters, while Paraga and Agios Stefanos provide a more laid-back vibe.

Getting there is easy if you’ve rented a car. Alternatively, buses depart from Mykonos town frequently to all these destinations.

Afternoon
Head back to the old port by lunchtime and rake a boat trip to Delos, an uninhabited island known for its extensive archaeological ruins. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was once a major religious center in ancient Greece.

My suggestion is to hire an official guide or book a guided tour to explore the ancient temples, the famous Terrace of the Lions, and other remnants of this sacred island.

Evening
Return to Mykonos and enjoy a sunset dinner at one of the island’s waterside restaurants. Then, if you’re up for it, experience Mykonos’ famous nightlife by heading to one of its renowned clubs or bars. As an alternative, a relaxing walk in the old town is a simple but great way to end your second day on the island

Day 7: Mykonos and Departure

Enjoy a last taste of Mykonos before you leave!

Morning
If you’ve got some time before your departure, take a leisurely walk around Mykonos Town. Check out the boutiques, sip a coffee, or relax by the waterfront.

Afternoon
Head to the port or airport for your onward journey. You can either head back to Athens or continue your Greek adventure on a bigger island like Crete. No matter what’s your next destination, this itinerary will surely leave unforgettable memories of the Cyclades.

Marpissa

Lesser known than Parikia and Naoussa but also than other vital villages in Paros, Marpissa is the perfect base if you’re looking for Aegean charm and a quiet vibe. This picturesque village in the eastern part of Paros offers delightful authenticity and tranquility.

Facing the nearby coast of Naxos Island, Marpissa features narrow winding streets, whitewashed houses adorned with colorful bougainvillea, and small squares.

The traditional Cycladic architecture creates a postcard-perfect setting for those seeking the most authentic experience.

In the village, you can visit the Folklore Museum of Marpissa to learn more about the island’s ancient traditions or discover the historic church of Agios Antonios, dating back to the 17th century, with its impressive bell tower. Piso Livadi

Another beautiful spot in Paros, right on the coast, is the small village of Piso Livadi. The Cycladic settlement features a relaxed atmosphere, traditional architecture, and a scenic waterfront.

The village has a stunning long shore with golden sand and clear waters. In the harbor area, you will find several traditional Greek cuisine taverns and cafes, which make the place an excellent base for those looking to unwind by the sea.

There are two gorgeous beaches a few minutes away, Kalogeros and Logaras, while several boat trips around Paros or to nearby islands depart from the harbor of Piso Livadi.

Traditional Cycladic architecture is prevalent in Piso Livadi, with whitewashed buildings, narrow alleyways, and blue accents, making it a fantastic spot for photography.

You can visit the old Church of Agios Georgios Thalassitis, a picturesque chapel built between the 13th and 14th centuries.

Finally, even when the area is not the best choice for nightlife, the village is a short drive from Naussa (12 km), allowing those staying in Piso Livadi convenient access to one of Paros’ most lively towns.

Lefkes

One of my favorite villages in Paros is Lefkes. It’s perched on a hillside and surrounded by a unique green landscape, offering a tranquil retreat from the more touristic coastal areas of the island.

Lefkes has narrow stone-paved streets, Cycladic architecture, and blue-domed churches, all traits that make it a place with a timeless appeal that allows you to experience the authenticity of Greek island life.

The village also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes, including the Aegean Sea and the neighboring Naxos, as it stands about 300 meters from the sea level.

Lefkes is also close to Parikia and Naoussa, making it a convenient base if you prefer to stay in a mountain village over a coastal settlement.

In Lefkes, you can explore the impressive Byzantine Church of Agia Triada, which dates from the 15th century, and the Museum of Folklore Culture of the Aegean.

The surrounding countryside is crisscrossed with hiking trails that lead through olive groves, vineyards, and scenic landscapes to other villages and coastal towns, offering a chance to explore the diverse terrain of Paros.

The name of this village comes from the salt pans that have been a typical trait of this area since ancient times and represent a remarkable share of the local heritage.

Golden Beach

Located halfway from Marpissa and Drios, the area surrounding the spectacular Golden Beach is a calm area to stay if you seek sun-soaked holidays. Also known as Chrissi Akti, this coastal area features a 700-meter long shore, one of the most spectacular on the island.

This wide beach features clear, shallow waters that make it a fantastic family-friendly destination while the gradual slope of the seabed makes it suitable for swimmers of all levels.

Besides, it offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy exciting water sports. The ideal windy conditions are a highlight in the area, making it an ideal spot for windsurfing and kiteboarding.

Several water sports centers along the beach offer equipment rental and lessons, allowing visitors to try their hand at these exhilarating activities.

There is a wide range of accommodations in Golden Beach, from luxury hotels to more modest studios and apartments. Moreover, the beach is lined with tavernas and beach bars, creating a lively atmosphere. Locals claim that this is the best spot on the island for stunning sunset views.

Wonderful turquoise waters are the perfect excuse to spend a day in the ancient port of the island, Drios. You can find this green and lush village on the southeastern coast, in a laid-back location, ideal to spend a holiday away from more busy towns.

This settlement near Golden Beach (Chrissi Akti), one of the most famous beaches on the island, offering easy access to its crystal-clear waters, making it a great choice for beach enthusiasts. 

Drios has a small fishing harbor that adds to its coastal charm, this lovely spot is perfect to enjoy views of the sea, and perhaps watch the local fishermen at work.

The region around Drios is known for its windy conditions, making it an excellent destination for windsurfing and other activities.

If you are interested in local architecture and ancient buildings, don’t miss the Church of Agios Georgios, an old charming from the 16th century.

Right above Drios, the little village of Aspro Chorio is also great for a walk and a traditional Greek coffee.

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy different hiking trails that connect Drios to other interesting spots, including beaches, ancient monasteries, and small villages.

There are several trails that are over 20 km long, however, there’s a popular, somewhat easier, and shorter walk that connects Drios to Lefkes, which offer some stunning views of the island.

Ambelas

One more settlement worth a stop during your trip to Paros is Ambelas, only a few minutes from Naoussa, home to a relaxed atmosphere and traditional Greek charm.

Ambelas maintains a quintessential fishing village vibe with its small harbor and whitewashed houses, offering a glimpse into the authentic island lifestyle. Paros is a very popular island of the Greek Cyclades and a favorite destination among Greeks. However, Paros has recently seen an increasing number of foreign tourists.

Situated in the center of the Aegean Sea, it attracts an eclectic range of visitors, from solo travelers to water sports fans, families with kids, groups of friends, and honeymooners.

Local traditional villages include the beautiful port of Naoussa, the capital Paroikia, and the central village of Lefkes. Stone-cobbled streets and alleys, white cubic houses, and blue-domed churches are at the core of the Parian facade. 

Exotic beaches such as Kolymbithres or Santa Maria are popular with those who love crystalline waters and soft sand. The southeastern part of the island, with beaches like Chryssi Akti (also known as Golden Beach), attracts hundreds of windsurfers every year.

The local gastronomy is foodie heaven. Paros is famous for its seafood and cheese and an excellent selection of local wine.

If you want to try a beloved dish from Paros, I recommend a short trip to the mountain village of Lefkes. Here, local tavernas are famous for the snails with skordalia, a delicious creamy dip made with potatoes, garlic, and olive oil. 

Getting to Paros

Paros is easy to reach from Athens by sea or by flight. Ferryboats to Paros depart from the Port of Piraeus and Rafina (another port in Athens, near Athens International Airport). You can read more here to learn how to get to Paros.

GETTING TO PAROS BY FERRY

Paros port is easily accessible from Athens through the ports of Piraeus and Rafina, whereas there is also a connection with other islands. The trip from Athens lasts 3-5 hours, depending on the type of boat.

The Port of Parikia is a ferry hub in the Aegean. Ferries arrive and depart from and to every island in the region, serving almost all the Cycladic Islands and some islands in the Dodecanese. Ferries also depart from the port of Naoussa on special occasions. Always check your ports of arrival and departure beforehand and pay special attention if you arrive and depart from different ports.

Paros is on the route of the ferries reaching the Cyclades, but can also be reached from Crete and the Dodecanese. It can take from 3 to 5 hours to get to Paros from Athens (depending on the ferry service you choose). Companies traveling to Paros include Blue Star Ferries, Golden Star Ferries, Hellenic Seaways, and Sea Jets.

GOOD TO KNOW: There are 3 to 5 daily ferries from the Port of Piraeus and one weekly ferry from Lavrio Port that stops on the Kea and Kythnos islands.

GETTING TO PAROS BY PLANE

The airport of Paros is about 12 km from the capital, Parikia. Depending on the season, direct flights from Athens (with Olympic Air) reach Paros 2 to 4 times daily. Once you make it to the airport of Paros, you can either hire a taxi, rent a car, or take the bus that — in summer — takes you to the island’s capital.

Moving around in Paros

Car rental is always a good idea on the Greek islands. It’s usually cheap and convenient, allowing freedom of movement and last-minute decisions. You won’t depend on public transport schedules. 

Always check in advance what kind of driving license you need. Europeans can drive with the European Driving License, but drivers from other countries might need an international permit.

Bigger Greek islands, such as Paros, Naxos, or Mykonos, have an efficient bus service that makes it convenient to reach different beaches and villages. Bus rides cost from €1.80 to €2.00. Taxis are also convenient on Paros and in many other parts of Greece.

Essentials for your trip to Paros

Remember to bring a packable beach hat and sunscreen, especially if you travel with kids. The prices of those two essential items can be really high in coastal villages, so it’s always better to buy them in advance. 

When venturing on long hikes among the mountains, water is also essential. Do not underestimate the midday sun in the Aegean, it can lead to extreme dehydration and painful sunburn.

Parikia, the Capital

The best way to start your first morning in Parikia (sometimes spelled Paroikia) is with a visit to the Chora, the old town. This ancient village is a maze of alleys and squared Cycladic houses, with imposing Venetian buildings in the heart of the historic district.

Reach the impressive Medieval fortress or Frankish Castle, which stands above the village and overlooks the sea. Next, discover some of the old chapels built inside the fortress’s walls. This corner of the island offers spectacular views of the bay and the port.

Thanks to the wide range of accommodations offered, the number of bars and restaurants, and the animated nightlife, most visitors tend to forget that Parikia is a rather small village that has maintained its tradition and unique architecture, two characteristics that locals are proud of. 

The squares, the big windmill at the port welcoming tourists, but also the seaside promenade, are always bustling with traffic and people. Parikia is one of the best places to stay in Paros. There are banks, supermarkets, pharmacies, tourist offices, and a hospital.

Things to See and Do in Parikia

Panagia Ekatontapoliani and the museums

The church of Panagia Ekatontapoliani (or the Virgin of the Hundred Doors) is a perfect visit for your first afternoon in Paros. This Byzantine religious complex is enclosed by a fortified wall.

The legend says that only 99 doors have been found. The hundredth one will only be found when Istanbul again becomes Constantinople – and, therefore, Greek.

The entrance to the church is free. There’s also an important Byzantine Museum in the complex.

The Archaeological Museum of Paros is located behind the church. Among its famous exhibits, there is a Winged-Victory Statue from the 5th century BC.

The ancient cemetery of Paroikia

The Ancient Cemetery of Paroikia is an important archeological site not far from the port. There, you can see tombs belonging to different historical periods and a mysterious mass grave unique in the Aegean. 

Not far, on a hill towards the south of Paroikia, there is the Sanctuary of Asclepius, from the 3rd century BC

The Valley of the Butterflies

In the area nearby, about 3 km (less than 2 miles) towards the center of the island, there is a place worth a visit, the Valley of the Butterflies. Also called just Petaloudes, it’s a little paradise of gardens and paths with an environment unique only to Paros and to the island of Rhodes (Dodecanese).

Petaloudes is a rich environment, very similar to a rain forest due to the lush vegetation of ivy plants. A butterfly species (Jersey Tiger) usually lays its eggs in August, while thousands of red and black butterflies can be seen in Spring.

Among the ones close to the city center, Piso Livadi often gets very crowded. The village of Piso Livadi is well worth a visit as well. In the restaurants of the port try the mussels and cuttlefish. For a more peaceful spot, Souvla, also known as Delfini, is a good beach close to the Sanctuary of Asclepius. 

Head further south to visit the bay of Agia Irini. Thanks to the palm trees surrounding it, this beach has a unique tropical flair, offering a very different landscape from what you would normally experience in Greece. 

Where to Eat in Parikia

• The Little Green Rocket is a trendy venue in the heart of Parikia. They serve delicious local food and knowledgeable staff is always available to suggest the best dishes. I recommend you to taste their mushrooms filled with feta cheese and any other seafood dish.

• Happy Cows is the place to go if you can’t do without red meat. They also serve good salads and a variety of pasta.

• For a romantic dinner with a view, Magaya is known for traditional Mexican dishes. A great seaside place also for a quick lunch.

Where to Stay in Parikia

• Paros Palace is a wonderful 4-star hotel fairly close to the beach with pretty views of the island.
• Pyrgaki Hotel has a beautiful swimming pool overlooking the sea.
• For those that prefer the comforts of a house, Paros Paradise Apartments are new holiday units meters from the sea.

Naoussa Village

This little town, relatively new to mass tourism, is a top place to visit during your holidays in Paros. Once a quiet fishermen’s village, Naoussa has become a cool area loved by locals and tourists alike. There are several beaches to visit in the area, too. 

This picturesque village is located in the north of the island, on a wide bay just 10 km from Paroikia. Considered one of the prettiest villages in Greece, Naoussa has managed to keep its authenticity despite the increase in tourism. 

Naoussa is an authentic Cycladic settlement. Common views include the well-known Greek chapels, little houses adorned with blossomed flowers, and a maze of stone-paved alleys.

Everything you need to move around in Paros is in the main square of Naoussa. There are taxi stops, buses, and car rental services. At the square, there are also ATM machines and tourist offices. 

It is less busy than the capital, and unique nightlife can still be enjoyed thanks to the many bars and nightclubs usually open until dawn.

Explore Naoussa, in Paros

The best way to start your day in the village is by heading to the quaint fishing port. Enjoy a nice breakfast here in Sousouro Cafe Bar, famous for the espresso and its Greek yogurt with honey and fruit. After breakfast, walk around the port and enjoy the view of fresh octopus hanging under the sun. 

The Venetian Fortress of Naoussa

You can see the old Venetian Fortress of Naoussa at the port, partially sunk but still impressive. The fort is connected to the land through a small rocky path. 

The fortress is a characteristic spot in the village. The Venetians built it in the 15th century as a watchtower to defend the island against pirate attacks. It was a front line in times of war, thanks to its perfect location to watch the Aegean Sea.

Its unique architecture made it difficult for enemies to approach the port where commercial ships used to dock. Only a few parts of the fort are still standing today; originally, there was a second watchtower that no longer exists. 

The Marina

Just opposite the fortress, you can visit the church of Agios Nikolaos, which has a typical Cycladic blue dome. The rest of the village continues towards a tiny fishing marina, with bars, ouzeries, and fish taverns where the Venetian storehouses used to be. 

The colorful caiques (boats) dock here, adding a romantic touch to the place. For a quick lunch, choose a taverna in the area.

Paros Wine Museum

Take a break and have a glass of wine for a great afternoon. Naoussa is home to the Paros Moraitis Wine Museum and Winery, an interesting place to visit on the island. In the museum, you can see the underground aging cellars and check out the wine-tasting hall. 

The third generation of the Moraitis family seeks to preserve the authentic quality of the local vineyards, which have roots in the ancient Cycladic era (3,200-2,000 BC). 

The museum offers an overview of Parian wine-making history and portrays different equipment and other agricultural tools. It is a wonderful display of the history of Greek wine.

Agios Antonios Monastery

Definitely leave the late afternoon for one of the most significant visits, the beautiful church, and the monastery of Agios Antonios. This traditional monastery has two domes and Ionic columns supporting the altar. The church, which dates back to 1500, is at the top of Kephalos Hill. The monastery is one of the oldest monasteries on the island. 

This whitewashed complex of buildings retains the true charm of Greece. The church is held with much reverence by the locals, Parians sincerely believe that the church of Agios Antonios watches over them when they leave to fish at sea. During the season, the monastery is open to the public.

The Archaeological Site of Koukounaries

Very close to the beach of Kolimbithres, Koukounaries is a hill home to a Mycenean Acropolis (1200 B.C.). Here, check out the wonderful temple in honor of the goddess Athena, dating back to the Geometric period. 

Koukounaris is listed among the most ancient Acropolis in the Aegean, the area presents fantastic panoramas and truly spectacular rock formations.

Best Beaches Near Naoussa

Naoussa Bay is home to Kolimbithres, not really a beach but a series of different bays divided by unusual rock formations. The rocks have been eroded by the water and the wind, giving them a peculiar shape and a smooth surface. 

These are shallow bays, safe for kids, with crystal clear waters. Include Kolimbithres in your Paros itinerary, spending the day here is a relaxing, unique experience. 

To visit Kolimbithres you can use your car or choose one of the tiny boats at the port of Naoussa (departures every half an hour).

Just 6 km East of Naoussa, another popular beach among families is Santa Maria, which is also loved by surfers. Santa Maria is probably the most popular beach in Paros; however, given its vastness, it never feels too crowded. 

This beach is easy to reach from Paroikia and Naoussa, even with the regular public buses.

In the same area, small bays, all going under the generic name of Santa Maria, offer quiet corners to spend a day in complete peace.

Where to eat in Naoussa

Paros’s gastronomic tradition relies on tasty fresh products and old-time recipes.

• In the old fishing port of Naoussa, different seaside restaurants will attract your attention. If you don’t mind paying extra for a view, try Mario, they serve good seafood and abundant fish platters. 
• However, if you prefer an inexpensive solution, one of the best places in town is Yemeni Wine Restaurant.

Where to sleep in Naoussa

• Madaky Hotel is in the center of the village, close to the beach and the port, and a pleasant atmosphere.
• For romantic couples, Porto Naoussa Adults Only offers great accommodation just a few meters from the port of Naoussa.
• One of the coolest options in Naoussa, with a unique swimming pool, is Maryo Village.

South Paros: Ambelas, Logaras, and the Golden Beach

Going even further towards the south, the village of Ambelas is home to Ambelas beach, the first of a long series of beaches you will find on your way. Ambelas is ideal for kids because the cove is protected from the winds.

There’s a beach club where you can have a bite or a three-course meal—it’s up to you! The club offers a laid-back environment with sunbeds and bar service on the beach.

You can also spend the day in Ambelas on one of the little shores of Glyfada, Tsoukalia, or Molos. Another favorite beach, Logaras, popular for the many bars, taverns, and hotels, is twenty kilometers south of this point.

Keep driving south for about 4 kilometers to visit one of the hottest beaches, Golden Beach (Chrissi Akti), one of the most beautiful on the island. It is loved by young people, couples, and families alike. 

This long, sandy beach is fully organized, with windsurfing facilities, beach bars, and tavernas. If you are into windsurfing or want to try it, check rates and services here. In the area, there are plenty of hotels and rooms for rent. Several buses departing from the capital get to the beach during the season.

Golden Beach is better-known for its ideal wind conditions, every August the beach hosts the Professional Windsurfing World Cup, gathering many windsurfing celebrities.

Paros Villages

Lefkes

It’s a good idea to begin a day in Paros by driving towards the mountains. About 10 kilometers from Paroikia lies Lefkes, the first capital of Paros.

Lefkes is a gorgeous village surrounded by stunning pinewoods. Here, traditional whitewashed houses and a unique landscape call for peaceful walks. Don’t worry if you get tired: take a coffee break in one of the many old-time kafenia, or village cafés of Lefkes.

Spend some time visiting the Municipal Hostel of Lefkes, this building has been transformed into the House of Literature, a unique initiative by the Municipality of Paros and the European Translation Center.

They provide accommodation for writers, translators, and other artists who come to Lefkes to work and create in this peaceful environment. 

The sea and the nearby island of Naxos can be seen in the background. In fact, the first residents of this village were immigrants from Naxos and the more distant Greek island of Crete.

But many others were locals who built the village at a considerable altitude to seek protection against pirate attacks. The hills surrounding the village host restored traditional windmills, a postcard-like landscape that attracts many visitors.

Agia Triada Church

This imposing church dates back to the 19th century. It rises behind the village’s white houses and is the second-largest Paros church after Ekatontapiliani.

Traditions of Paros: Gastronomic festival of Lefkes

If you visit Paros in summer, you can’t miss the Feast of Karavolas, a moment of social gathering for locals and visitors alike (normally held at the end of August).

Lefkes’s most important tradition is its culinary roots. In the village, try the Karavoles, big snails served with skordalia (a local sauce made of garlic and potatoes). Lefkes is also known for its cheese production, the chickpeas in the oven, and the local wine. 

Marathi Marble Quarries

If you still have time during your visit to the village, take the inner road that connects Lefkes and Marpissa to visit the famous Marathi Marble Quarries. 

Famous Greek sculptors have always preferred Parian marble because of its consistency and transparency. Famous masterpieces, like the Venus de Milo, have been sculpted using the marble from Paros.

As you walk along the pathway to the quarry, check the abandoned buildings that used to belong to a French mining company operating in the area.

Moving Around in Lefkes, Paros

The only way to go around Lefkes is on foot, there are two parking lots at the village entrance, where you must park your car.

Where to Eat in Lefkes

• Flora has a fantastic view faces the whole village, the sea, and even the island of Naxos. This traditional restaurant has been serving a wide choice of local and international dishes for about 20 years and specializes in grilled meat.
• In the heart of the village, Lefkiano is a small restaurant with a friendly atmosphere. The fresh food has given the place a fantastic reputation. Try their traditional fried calamari with a glass of ouzo or a shot of the local drink, souma. For a refreshing dish, go with the Lefkes’ Salad, with rusks, tomatoes, onions, rockets, olives, and local sour cheese.

Choose the mountains of Paros as your place to stay on the island

Aliki and Agairia Villages

Aliki is a fishing village on the island’s southern coast, close to the Airport. Piso Aliki is a white-pebbled beach in the area where you spend the day. Choose one of the several bars or taverns for lunch and try a gouna made from sun-dried fish (usually mackerel).

From Aliki, it’s possible to visit another picturesque village closer to the mountains, Agairia, where you can walk and discover the Cycladic architecture. It’s no more than 3 km from the coast.

Drios Village

Wonderful turquoise waters are the perfect excuse to spend a day in the ancient port of the island, Drios. You can find this green and lush village on the southeastern coast. It’s a very laid-back location, ideal to spend a holiday away from more busy cities. Accommodation is good, some of the best villas in Paros are here. 

For those interested in sightseeing, check out the Cave of the Demons and the shipbeds where the ancient Parians would house their boats. Above Drios, the little village of Aspro Chorio is also great for a walk and traditional Greek coffee.

Where to start your day with a good cup of coffee

Meltemi is probably one of the best coffee bars in Paros. It is ideal for a cup of coffee in the morning and a relaxing cocktail in the evening.

What to eat in Paros

I’ve already mentioned the snails with Skordalia from Lefkes. However, that’s not all. Paros is famous for the different varieties of cheese, squid, mussels, and octopus.

In Naoussa, fried calamari and grilled octopus are other gastronomic staples. When in Paros, don’t miss a shot of souma; the local spirit is usually served after a meal with complimentary local sweets or fruit.

Spend a Day in Nearby Antiparos

This small but bright Greek island is located right across Paros. At first sight, its traits and colors picture a typical Cycladic landscape: whitewashed houses, light blue doors, and church domes. 

However, unlike many other Cycladic islands, there are no massive groups of tourists. It’s a heavenly and lonely landscape. Laid-back and quiet, Antiparos is nothing but a hidden paradise. In complete harmony with nature, Antiparos is great for detoxing from city life.

How to reach Antiparos from Paros

To reach Antiparos, take a ferry from Paros island. Boat departures become more frequent during the high season. Drive to the port of Pounda where ferries depart for Antiparos every 30 minutes. The crossing takes only 7 minutes and costs less than 10 € each way. You can also take a boat from Paroikia, with the same frequency.

Morning Coffee: Start your day with a good glass of cold coffee (frappé). Feel free to choose any of the tiny bars near the small port of Antiparos. For something more traditional, choose one of the Greek kafenia on the main square, they are picturesque spots with tables spread around a centennial eucalyptus. 

Lunch and Dinner: It’s a great idea to enjoy a picnic on the beach. Get all you need from the supermarket across the port. Bear in mind that it has a very limited stock. Once you have all you need, head to explore the beaches close to the main village. 

What’s the Weather Like in Paros and Antiparos

Just like in the rest of the Aegean, Paros enjoys mild weather in spring and autumn. These are the best months to visit. The weather is hot and dry during the summer. The Meltemi, a northern wind that most tourists dislike, helps endure the high temperatures. 

Winters in the south of the Mediterranean are mild, with few showers and some very cold days. Not many infrastructures remain open in winter. Choose May, June, or September to avoid extreme heat and crowded facilities.

Other Day Trips from Paros

Popular islands of the Cyclades are fairly easy to reach since Paros is located in the center of the Aegean. Daily ferry services go to Amorgos, Ios, or Naxos, as well as to the more exclusive Mykonos and Santorini.

Can you Fly to Paros? Getting to Paros by Plane

The airport of Paros is about 12 km from the capital, Paroikia (also written Parikia). Direct flights from Athens (with Olympic Air) reach Paros from 2 to 4 times every day, depending on the season.

Once you make it to the airport of Paros, you can either hire a taxi, rent a car, or take the bus that — in summer — takes you to the island’s capital.

How to Get to Paros by Ferry

The Port of Paroikia is the real ferry hub in the Aegean. Ferries arrive and depart from and to every island in the region, serving almost all the Cycladic Islands and some islands in the Dodecanese.

Ferries also depart from the port of Naoussa on special occasions. Always check beforehand your ports of arrival and departure. Pay special attention if arrive and depart from different ports.

The bus station is just meters away from the center of the capital as well as from the Port of Paroikia.

Family Holidays in Paros: General Details About the Island

Located in a central position in the Aegean Sea, Paros is the fourth Cycladic island.

It can be easily defined as an ideal destination in Greece for families for different reasons, but mainly because it’s more affordable than other islands still maintaining that unique Cycladic flair that you’ve probably seen in so many pictures.

Besides, the island offers beautiful beaches, interesting museums, archaeological sites, a wide choice of outdoor activities, and some of the most delicious dishes in Greek gastronomy. 

In the main town of Parikia and the smaller villages, especially Naoussa (next to the sea) and Lefkes (in the mountains), there are picturesque narrow alleys with white stone walls reflecting the sunlight and bright blue doors and windows in typical Cycladic style.

Getting to Paros from Athens

Since Paros is one of the most popular and important of the Cycladic islands, it’s very easy to get to Paros from Athens, you can do it either by traveling by sea or by plane. 

Getting to Paros with the ferry: Most ferries depart from the Port of Piraeus, but it is also possible to depart from the Port of Rafina, which is located quite close to Athens International Airport. 

It takes from 3 to 5 hours to reach Paros from Athens depending on the vessel of choice, for instance, if you choose to travel with an Athens-Paros high-speed ferry the journey will only last 3 hours.

It is also possible to travel from Crete to Paros and from the islands of the Dodecanese, such as Rhodes. Among the ferry companies you can check are Blue Star Ferries, Hellenic Seaways, Sea Jets, and Golden Star Ferries.

Getting to Paros by plane: The local airport is near the capital, the flying time from Athens is about 40 minutes, and the companies that travel to Paros are Olympic Air (sometimes operated by Aegean Airlines), Sky Express (a Cretan company), and Astra Airlines.

Exploring Paros with Kids: Villages, Hikes, and Museums

Parikia is the main town and harbor on the island and has a string of tavernas along its waterfront and narrow alleyways with white-washed houses to explore.

Naoussa is another very picturesque village, it’s situated about 15 minutes bus ride from the capital and is still a working fishing harbor.

Piso Livadi is a pretty fishing village and is the ideal place to visit if you enjoy seafood.

Island museums include the Sculpture Museum, the Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum, and the Folklore Museum.

There are churches to visit including Ekantotapiliani Church – the name means the church of 100 doors – and the Venetian Castle, for a breathtaking view over Parikia.

On the northern part of the island, you can enjoy the Environmental and Cultural Park of Paros, which has a network of walking paths.

There are caves to visit too with Archilochos being the most important of them.

Both Paros and Antiparos have numerous hiking routes to enjoy including the valley and village of Lefkes, the Ancient Marble Quarries, and the Valley of the Butterflies. 

Family-Friendly Beaches in Paros

One of the most popular features of the Cycladic islands is the crystal-clear waters and Paros has this and gorgeous sandy beaches too.

The beaches in Paros are unique, and – of course – going to the beach is one of the most popular things to do in Paros with kids.

Home to a flat landscape, the island has quiet and secluded beaches with calm, crystal-clear waters that are perfect for young children. However, many other beaches are ideal for older children or to practice water sports.

The most child-friendly beaches are located on the south side of the island and include Kolymbithres Beach, Faragas Beach, and Marcello Beach.

Kolymbithres is the island’s best-known beach as it is surrounded by huge sand-smoothed boulders and has shallow and crystal clear water the beach of Monastiri is equally good and is situated at the other end of the same bay.

Marcello in Parikia is known for its smooth golden sand and calm waters. The water is shallow for a long way out making it ideal for small children and inexperienced swimmers. 

Lolantonis Beach is situated just south of the village of Drios on the island’s south coast and is particularly nice as it has clear turquoise waters and plenty of shade.

Ampelas is another beach that’s great for young children because it has calm waters every day and there are a couple of tavernas right on the beach serving simple but delicious Greek food that kids love!

Watery Fun at Paros’ Water Rark!

Aqua Paros Water Park is located near Naoussa, near both Monastiri Beach and Kolymbithres, and is one of the largest water parks in Greece.

The park is inside the premises of a hotel, and it has its private beach, pool with sea water that gets auto-recycled, 13 water slides of all shapes and sizes, and many other fun activities including a lazy river.

The on-site amenities include a bar, a self-service restaurant, sunbeds, umbrellas, changing rooms, a medical center, and more. There are also places for resting and for buying snacks as well as souvenirs. 

• Getting to the park: You can reach the park from the port of Naoussa by boat and by bus from Parikia. Prices to access the park, including water slides, range from €4 to €10. You can find more details on this page.

Enjoy Paros on Horseback… Something Original to Do in Paros with Children!

This is the perfect family activity if you have older children. There are a couple of centers on the island.

Kokou Horse Riding Center in Naoussa offers morning and afternoon hacks. The morning hack is 2.5 hours and includes riding along a couple of beaches and the afternoon one is about 1.5 hours.

Thanassis’ Farm is also in Naussa and it offers a variety of riding options including lessons and hacks in the local vicinity. 

Have a Go at Tennis

This idea is fun! There are mini-courses available at Paros Tennis Club in Agia Irini. They offer courses for young children aged 4-6 to learn the basics of tennis through fun games.

Take a Boat Trip to Other Greek Islands Nearby

There are several different boat excursions that visit the neighboring islands of Antiparos (a 15-minute trip)  and Naxos and these are fun to do as there is the opportunity to enjoy time on beaches that are only accessible by boat.

Another option is to enjoy a boat trip to some of the small Cyclades. You can easily visit the islands of Iraklia and Schinoussa with a group boat trip or discover Koufonisia, another small Cycladic island with truly dreamy landscapes and picture-perfect landscapes.

Let Kids Learn About Birds in Paros

Alkioni Aegean Wildlife Hospital in Paros is located in Kamares and it’s the only wild bird hospital on the island. The place is responsible for rehabilitating all the wild birds and other animals that need help all over Greece.

The hospital also provides shelter to animals victims of illegal hunting, illnesses, and accidents.

Create Your Pottery

Paros has two excellent pottery studios that you can book to visit.

The first is Yria in Parikia, run by artist Stelios Gikas. The other one is the Atelier Noe in the village of Aspro Chorio.

A visit to any of these two ceramic and pottery shops will let kids learn how to create their own pieces of pottery.

Fur further fun, at Atelier Noe, you can paint your handwork and return to collect it a few days later. 

Go Stargazing, One of the Top Things to Do in Paros with Kids!

You can enjoy an amazing night of stargazing either on a hill near the harbor at Parikia (or also on Antiparos Island).

These evenings are really interesting as you learn the history of astronomy, about the constellations, and hear many amazing astronomical facts often related to Greek mythology, something that kids usually love.

Children will also learn how to use a Newtonian reflector telescope turning the whole experience into one of the most fascinating things to do in Paros.

Part of the fun of a holiday in Paros is enjoying great water sports.

Paros is particularly well known for windsurfing and attracts many keen windsurfers each year and holds an important windsurfing race every August. Among the most popular windsurfing clubs and centers in Paros are:

The beach of Chrysi Akti (or Golden Beach), is well known for its beautiful golden-colored sand.
