Brindisi – Shortest Route, Best for Budget Travelers

Having departed from Brindisi many times, I can confirm it’s one of the best-kept secrets for sea travel between Italy and Greece. Located in Puglia, this port offers the shortest and most economical ferry routes to western Greece.

• To Igoumenitsa: ~8 hours, daily with Grimaldi Lines and European Seaways
• To Patra: 9–10 hours, several times per week
• To Corfu: ~7–8 hours, seasonal (summer only)
• To Kefalonia & Zante: limited summer service (Ventouris Ferries)

Brindisi is a no-fuss, efficient port ideal for those prioritizing speed and value. It’s also the closest point in Italy to the Greek mainland​.

• To Corfu: ~10 hours, daily in summer
• To Kefalonia: ~18 hours, seasonal

Operators for the Bari-Igoumenitsa route include Superfast Ferries and Anek Lines, which operate together, offering reliable year-round service. Ventouris Ferries offers the service during the high summer season, adding extra capacity and a few budget-friendly options for the busiest months.

Bari is especially useful if you’re exploring southern Italy (like Matera or Alberobello) before heading east.

Ferries from Bari generally set sail in the evening hours. This schedule makes them particularly convenient for overnight travelers who want to sleep through the crossing.

Despite the long journey, many opt for Ancona for its convenience if traveling from central Italy or Tuscany, which saves you a long car ride to Bari or Brindisi.

Venice, the romantic jewel of northern Italy, offers the longest ferry routes to Greece but also the most scenic.

While not for the time-pressed, it’s perfect if you want to turn your journey into part of your vacation. While long, this route offers a spectacular way to slowly shift from the elegance of northern Italy to the sun-soaked ease of Greece.

Traveling by Ferry with Kids

If you’re planning a ferry journey between Italy and Greece with little ones in tow, the good news is that most major operators offer generous discounts for children — something I’ve come to appreciate over the years, having made this crossing with my kids countless times while living in both countries.

Here’s how it typically breaks down:

• Infants under 4 years old can travel free of charge — provided they don’t occupy a bed. You’ll still need to issue a ticket for them (at zero cost), but it’s a straightforward process.

• If your under-4 child needs a bed or berth, you’ll receive a 50% discount on their fare.

• Children aged 4 to 12 are also eligible for a 50% discount across all seating categories — whether you’re booking a simple deck spot or a private cabin.

• One important rule to note: children occupying a bed in a cabin must be accompanied by an adult holding a full fare ticket. Cabin bookings are always tied to adults, and minors can’t be booked into one on their own.

These policies hold across most routes served by Superfast Ferries, Anek Lines, and Blue Star Ferries, especially on the popular corridors between Bari, Ancona, and Patra or Igoumenitsa​

Planning with kids does add a layer of logistics, but ferries can actually be a far more comfortable alternative to flying — especially when they’re excited to sleep on a boat and you don’t have to wrestle with airline baggage limits or tight seating. If you’re traveling in summer, I’d highly recommend booking a private cabin; it turns a long journey into a restful night.

Boarding can begin 3–4 hours before departure, so always arrive early—especially if you’re bringing a vehicle or have no reserved seat.

Having split my life between Italy and Greece, I’ve seen how seamlessly connected these two countries are. Of course flying is undeniably convenient, but ferries offer a deeper, slower experience that’s very much in tune with the Mediterranean spirit. And are a lot more affordable!

How to Get to Syros: Ferry

The most populr and convenient way to travel to Syros is by ferry. Located in the heart of the Cyclades, Syros is one of the many destinations connected to the mainland and other islands thanks to Greece’s well-established ferry network. 

For that reason, it is quite simple to get to Syros by ferry from several significant Greek ports, including Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, and Crete. 

I’ve traveled from Heraklion to Syros by ferry following a pretty straightforward route that had stops in Santorini, Ios, Paros, and Mykonos before reaching Syros. The total traveling time was about 6.5 hours.

There are several options when it comes to ferries and boats connecting the islands. You can choose between regular ferries, high-speed ferries, or catamarans, depending on your budget, preferences, weather, and time of year.

My suggestion is to book your ferry tickets in advance, especially during peak travel seasons, to secure your spot and avoid any last-minute inconveniences, especially if you travel overnight and want to book a cabin.

How to Get to Syros: Plane

Syros is one of the few Greek islands with an airport, the Dimitrios Vikelas National Airport (JSY). It’s a very short drive from the center of Ermoupoli (less than a 10-minute drive).

Traveling to Syros from Athens

Athens – Syros by Ferry

There are different navigation companies that connect Athens to Syros, one of the best options is Fast Ferries, which offers comfortable vessels and convenient schedules. 

To get to Syros, you must catch the ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens to Syros. The journey takes from 3 to 4 hours, allowing you to relax and enjoy the spectacular views of the Aegean and the Cycladdes on the way.

Other options include Blue Star Ferries and Seajets, this company offers a fast route connecting Athens to Syros that takes about 2 hours. 

Most ferry companies offer spacious seating areas, onboard amenities and shops, and different dining options. The travel experience can be pleasant and interesting. 

Do remember to book your tickets in advance, especially during peak travel season including Christmas, Easter, and specially summer (from early June until the end of September). This way, it will be easier to find tickets available. 

Athens- Syros by Plane

If you don’t have a lot of time and prefer to travel by plane, you can fly to Syros via Athens International Airport, Eleftherios Venizelos. A few domestic airlines operate regular flights from Athens to Syros, with a flight duration of around 30 minutes.

Olympic Air and Sky Express offer scheduled flights from Athens to Syros. So, even when international flights to Syros are still not available, you can fly to Athens and then get a connecting domestic flight to Syros.

Traveling to Syros from Other Greek Islands

You can easily get to Syros from other islands thanks to the efficient Greek ferry network. You can get to Syros from other Cycladic islands, including Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, and Naxos. There is a frequent ferry service that operates with a regular schedule. Frequencies tend to be higher from May to October.

The duration of the ferry ride varies depending on the starting point and the type of ferry (regular vs. fast). But it generally ranges from 1 to 4 hours.

For example, ferries from Mykonos to Syros take about one hour, while it can take around 3 hours to get to Syros from Santorini. If you depart from Crete, the traveling time will be around 6 hours

Other major islands with direct ferry connections to Syros are Ikaria, Tinos, Rhodes, Lesbos, and Kos. These ferry routes offer you the opportunity to explore more than one island during your time in Greece, and to enjoy the beauty of the Aegean Sea as you venture towards Syros.

Boat Tours to Syros

If you prefer to visit Syros hassle-free without worrying over logistics and route research, you can choose an organized tour by sea that offers a unique and more immersive experience. 

Several tour companies organize sea trips and itineraris that have been designed to explore multiple islands in the Cyclades, including Syros. 

These trips usually leave from popular destinations like Mykonos or Santorini and include stops at various islands, giving you enough time to explore attractions such as beaches, archaeological sites, and or villages. 

Private yachts and some cruise line also offer itineraries that include Syros among the Greek island destinations.

That way, it is possible to visit Syros but also discover other equally beautiful Greek islands in the region. Since these tours often include knowledgeable guides who provide insights into each destination’s history and culture, you can fully immerse in Syros’ beauty.

Traveling to Syros from Major Greek Cities

Apart from traveling from other islands, you can also travel to Syros from other cities in Greece. Other than Athens, there are also direct ferry connections between Syros and Thessaloniki or Kavala. 

Since some of these cities also have an airport, it makes it easier to fly there and then continue the journey to Syros either by ferry. With multiple options available, reaching Syros from major Greek cities can be a convenient alternative too.

How to Move around in Syros: Car Rental vs. Bus

Once in Syros, getting around is quite simple. The island is not big and has efficient transportation options. 

The main town of Ermoupoli is very walkable, meaning you can explore its narrow streets, picturesque squares, and historic landmarks at your own pace. Private parking options are available at the port area, making it easy to leave your car and move around on foot.

Renting a car (but also a scooter) is the best option to explore other areas on the island. Syros has well-maintained roads that connect its various villages, beautiful beaches, and attractions. 

I especially enjoyed driving in Syros; the roads are in fine condition and there’s not much traffic, especially on the shoulder season (April to June and September to October).

Driving along the coastal road to visit beaches such as Vari, Achladi, Poseidonia, and Finikas – all on the same day – is easy and enjoyable, and the views from the road are simply spectacular, so I thoroughly recommend this panoramic drive.

To move aroiund the capital and to reach a few other destinations, you can also use the local bus service, which operates frequent routes throughout the island, linking Ermoupoli with other towns and popular destinations like Galissas, Posidonia, and Megas Gialos. 

The local bus to move around within the city of Ermoupolis is free of charge and very efficient. Keep in mind that some parts of Ermoupolis are pedestrian-only, while many alleys are steep or feature stairs.

Another bus service takes you from Ermoupolis to other villages on the island; for instance, the bus to get to Galissas or Ano Syros from Ermoupoli costs between €1,60 and €2.

Taxis are also another option for those who wish for a comfortable and efficient means of transportation, especially for short distances or when traveling with heavy luggage. 

For instance, if you don’t feel like driving up to Ano Syros (the road can be pretty steep), a taxi from the port is around €5-€7.

But be sure that no matter which mode of transportation you choose, moving around Syros is convenient and enjoyable, making it easy to fully discover and appreciate all the treasures on the island.

Renting a Car in Syros

Renting a car in Syros is probably the most popular and convenient option. Generally, a car provides the freedom and flexibility to create a personalized itinerary and explore at your own pace.

So, renting a car in Syros allows the flexibility to visit the various villages, stunning beaches, and cultural sites scattered across the island.

Syros has a well-maintained road network, making it easy to navigate the island. Always remember that to rente a car in Syros you need to have a valid driver’s license and a credit card.

If you travel to Syros during the summer season, book your car in advance to secure the vehicle category of your choice. Renting a car last minute will only increase the price. 

When moving around on the islands, I often rent a car with I often use the car rental services of Discover Cars. This is my favorite car rental comparison site because they work with local agencies allowing you to compare reviews and fares are very convenient. Book your rental car here.

However, remember that parking might be an issue, especially during the peak season. If you’re staying in Ermoupolis, free parking spots are pretty limited (and paid ones, too, to be honest).

Parking near the port costs about 0,50 per hour, but that number adds up pretty fast if you park in the area for several nights in a row.

As you can see, several transport options make getting to Syros an exciting and easy experience. You can reach Syros from various Greek destinations, such as Athens or other Greek islands, making Syros convenient and accessible. 

And if you’re wondering whether it is worth visiting Syros, then the answer is quite easy. The island is incredibly beautiful, featuring amazing beaches, a fantastic cultural scene, and some unique traditional villages. A visit to Syros promises an authentic Greek island experience you won’t forget.

On the other hande, the island’s small size makes it easy to explore in just a couple of days. This turns Syros into a fantastic port of call for those island hopping in Greece.

In Syros you’ll find plenty to do, including swimming in fantastic beaches, learning about its fascinating history, and marveling at the Cycladic architecture in different villages.

Athens Metro System

The Athens Metro is one of the fastest and most reliable ways to get around the city. It connects the most important neighborhoods and tourist attractions, including the Acropolis, Monastiraki, Syntagma Square, and Omonia.

Metro Lines:

• Line 1 (Green Line): Connects the northern suburbs (Kifisia) to the south (Piraeus), passing through Omonia, Monastiraki, and Thissio stations. This line is often used to reach Piraeus Port.

• Line 2 (Red Line): Connects Elliniko (southern suburb) to Kifisia (northern suburb), passing through important stations such as Syntagma, Acropolis, and Omonia.

• Line 3 (Blue Line): Connects Airport to Egaleo, passing through Syntagma and Monastiraki. Line 3 is especially helpful if you’re arriving at or departing from the Athens International Airport.

Operating Hours:

• Metro trains run from: 5:30 AM until midnight (until 2:30 AM on Fridays and Saturdays).
• Frequency: Trains typically run every 5-10 minutes, depending on the time of day.

Ticket Prices:

• A single ride ticket costs €1.20 (valid for 90 minutes within Athens).
• A 1-day tourist ticket for unlimited travel on the metro, buses, and trams is €10.
• A 3-day tourist pass for unlimited travel costs €22 and includes a transfer from/to the airport.

Tip: The metro system is modern, air-conditioned, and safe, making it a comfortable choice for tourists.

Athens Buses and Trolleys

Athens has a vast bus network that covers the entire city and surrounding areas, including suburban neighborhoods, and even the beaches. Trolley buses (electric buses) are also available in the city center and are a quieter, eco-friendly option.

Buses:

• Routes: There are over 300 bus routes serving Athens, including both city buses and intercity buses. You can get almost anywhere in the city by bus.

• Night Buses: Many bus routes operate at night, offering a convenient way to get around after the metro closes.

Trolleys:

• Electric Buses (Trolleys): These are quieter and mostly operate in the city center. Their routes overlap with bus lines, but they have a more eco-friendly operation.

Operating Hours:

• Most buses run from 5 AM to midnight. The night buses run between midnight and 5 AM.

Ticket Prices:

• The regular bus/trolley ticket costs €1.20 for a single ride (valid for 90 minutes across buses, trams, metro, and trolley).
• The 1-day tourist ticket is also valid for buses.

Tip: Bus schedules can vary, so it’s useful to check the route numbers and maps. Major stops have timetables displayed, and real-time information can also be checked through apps.

3. Athens Tram System

The Athens Tram offers a scenic route along the coast, making it an excellent option for exploring the city’s southern suburbs and beaches. It operates between the city center (Syntagma) and Glyfada, Voula, and Vouliagmeni.

Operating Hours:

• Tram runs from 5 AM to 1:30 AM, with frequency every 15-30 minutes.

Ticket Prices:

• Tram tickets are the same as those for the metro and buses (€1.20 per single ride, valid for 90 minutes).
• A 1-day tourist pass is also valid on trams.

4. Athens Suburban Railway (Proastiakos)

The Proastiakos serves as the suburban railway system of Athens, connecting the city to outlying areas such as Korinthos, Elefsina, and Lavrio, and also provides access to the Athens International Airport.

Airport Transfer:

• The Proastiakos is the easiest and most affordable way to reach Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) from central Athens. The train ride takes about 40 minutes.

Ticket Prices:

• A one-way ticket from Athens to the Airport costs around €10.
• A single ride to suburban destinations typically costs around €1.40.

Operating Hours:

• Trains run from 5:30 AM to 11 PM.

5. Athens Taxi Services

Taxis are readily available throughout Athens and are relatively inexpensive, especially when shared by multiple passengers.

Hailing a Taxi:

• Taxis can be hailed directly from the street or you can book one via phone apps like Beat or Taxiplon.
• Always ensure the taxi meter is running when you start your ride.

Taxi Fares:

• The basic fare for a taxi starts at €3.50 during the day.
• Airport taxis: A ride from Athens International Airport to the city center costs around €50.

6. Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) Transfers

Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) is connected to the city center by several transport options.

Public Transportation Options to/from the Airport:

• Metro: Line 3 (Blue Line) connects the airport to the city center. The journey takes around 40 minutes.

• Bus: Express buses X95 (to Syntagma Square), X96 (to Piraeus Port), and other routes provide 24-hour service. Bus travel time is around 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on traffic.

• Taxi: A taxi ride to central Athens costs around €50, depending on traffic conditions.

• Private Transfer: I usually use Welcome Pickups to get from Piraeus Port to Athens International Airport.

Ticketing and Fares

Tickets for all public transportation modes (metro, bus, tram) are unified, meaning the same ticket is valid for all services within a 90-minute window. Tickets can be purchased from:

• Metro stations (vending machines and ticket counters)
• Bus stops (ticket machines)
• Kiosks around Athens.

Types of Tickets:

• Single Ticket: €1.20 (valid for 90 minutes on all modes of transport).
• 1-Day Tourist Ticket: €10 (unlimited travel on all public transport for one day).
• 3-Day Tourist Pass: €22 (unlimited travel for three days).

Reloadable Cards:

• You can also buy the Athens Travel Card, which is a reloadable smart card for frequent travelers. It’s available in metro stations.

8. Public Transport Apps

There are several apps you can download to make navigating Athens’ public transportation even easier:

• OASA Telematics: Official app providing real-time information for buses, trams, and metro.
• Google Maps: Offers public transport directions, including metro, bus, and tram routes.
• Beat and Taxiplon: For booking taxis in Athens.

Tips for Using Public Transport in Athens

• Always validate your ticket before entering the metro or tram.
• Keep your ticket with you during the whole journey to avoid fines if checked.
• Avoid rush hours (8:00-9:30 AM and 5:00-7:00 PM) as trains and buses can be crowded.
• Stay cautious at night, especially when using the metro or bus late in less populated areas.

The Greek Islands are some of the most popular summer destinations in the world, and for good reason! If you’re planning to relax on pristine beaches, explore ancient ruins, or soak in amazing sunset views, packing for a trip to the Greek Islands can be tricky.

You’ll want to make sure you’re prepared for everything while keeping your luggage light and practical. Keep this packing list at hand to know everything you should put in your luggage!

You can use your national driving permit as long as you’re over 18 years old). However, if you’re from another country, check to see if an International Driver’s Permit is required.

• Credit/Debit Cards & Cash: While most places in Greece accept credit and debit cards, it’s wise to carry some cash with you. Smaller islands may only have one or two ATMs, and not all of them accept American Express, so it’s better to have alternatives like Visa or MasterCard. Make sure you have enough cash for day trips or purchases in more remote areas, having a little bit of cash in euros is handy, especially in smaller towns or markets.

• Boarding Pass: Keep a copy of your boarding pass handy, either on your mobile device or printed. You’ll need it when checking in or boarding your flight.
