Santa Maria Beach

The country has also amazing shores on the mainland. Some of them are quiet and secluded, and other ones more popular, even featuring great water sports facilities.

No matter where you decide to spend your next family vacation in Greece, finding a beach that’s fun and safe for your kids is key for a relaxing time in full peace of mind.

As a mama of two who lives on Greece’s biggest island, I’ve created this with some of the top family-friendly beaches in Greece. They are safe and shallow enough for smaller kids, and some of them even offer activities geared toward older kids.

Top Family-Friendly Beaches in Greece

Elafonisi Beach, Crete

Although there is an incredible amount of family-friendly beaches in Crete, the most famous one is, undoubtedly, the pink sand beach of Elafonisi, in the western region of Chania.

This is a well-organized beach, big enough to find the right spot to spend the day and beat the crowds. Along the coast, you will find both areas with organization and solitary places (often with little shadow).

In Elafonisi, the sea is shallow and extremely clean, and the pinkish tone of the sand is one of the most attractive features in this area.

The bay is wide and safe even when it’s windy, there are a few snack bars and a couple of taverns in the area as well. Water sports are also popular in Elafonisi.

Avithos Beach, Kefalonia

Considered one of the best kid-friendly beaches in Kefalonia, Avithos Beach is a gorgeous, tranquil shore with crystalline waters and golden (almost red) sand. On the beach, the magnificent cliff backdrop adds an adventurous touch to the overall atmosphere… And kids love it!

In the area, there are enough facilities to make the beach day easy. The beach is safe and shallow, perfect for little swimmers.

There are just a few snack bars and fish taverns only a few meters from the coast, so packing a lunch won’t be necessary.

Simos Beach, Elafonisos, Peloponnese

The best-known beach on the small island of Elafonisos, in the Peloponnese, Simos Beach features waters with incredible shades of blue, impressive natural sand dunes, and a gorgeous natural landscape surrounding the area.

The beach offers a unique combination of Caribbean-like hues that make you think of a heavenly shore more than a place on Earth.

You will find different shores in the area, some of them with organization, including the possibility to rent loungers and umbrellas. Access to the beach is not close to the nearby parking area (otherwise quite spacious), and is done through a sand path.

Drinks and snacks can be purchased on the beach but the organization is, in general, quite minimal.

Plaka Beach, Naxos

Wide, and calm, with shallow turquoise waters and fine white sand, the long Plaka Beach in Naxos is one of those Greek beaches that conquer you! Personally, this is one of my favorite beaches in Greece!

The beach is really wide and offers organized areas and other more solitary spots (over here, nudism is very common). So you can choose whether to stay on your own or to rent an umbrella and spend the day in a more crowded area.

Opposite the long beachside promenade, there are different restaurants, supermarkets, and even hotels and studios, so there is no need to pack food for the day.

Santa Maria Beach, Paros

Although it is one of the most popular beaches on the island, Santa Maria is so wide that it never feels too crowded. However, if you prefer a more secluded beach with organization and facilities for families.

The main Santa Maria Beach is a famous place for windsurfing and other water sports, therefore not as good for kids since the sea can be wavy.

However, there are several coves in the area, such as the one in the picture, Mikri (or Small) Santa Maria, all of them generally known as Santa Maria, which are really idyllic.

In the area, you will find different facilities, including toilets, restaurants, snack bars, and even water activities. Renting an umbrella is also possible on these beaches.

Paleokastritsa Beach, Corfu

Paleokastritsa is one of the best family-friendly destinations in Corfu. The village boasts six different shores on the northwestern area of the island.

Most of the beaches are well-organized and offer a variety of water activities for kids and families. The popular Agios Spyridon is probably the prettiest shore in the area.

There are several restaurants, taverns, bars, and shops, so you won’t need to worry about packing a huge beach bag for the day.

Parents enjoy the facilities that also include a parking area and a taxi boat station. This is the only sandy beach in Paleokastritsa, while all the others feature small, white pebbles. For that reason, it is probably the most recommended for families.

Voidokilia Beach, Messinia, Peloponnese

Arguably one of the best beaches on the mainland, Voidokilia Beach is one of the prettiest shores in the Peloponnese.

Although there are no facilities or amenities to make the stay easier, the place can be fully enjoyed with a little organization beforehand. So, don’t forget to pack your lunch, cold drinks, and carry sunscreen for the little ones.

The bay has a magnificent shape featuring very shallow waters, often not as cold as you would expect.

The beach has a position that makes it protected from winds, so the water is always calm and virtually waveless, ideal for little kids that are learning to swim.

Kalamaki Beach, Zakynthos

Although we are used to the stunning image of Navagio Beach in Zakynthos, the best family beach on the island is Kalamaki.

Featuring a secluded atmosphere and a shallow coast, the place is safe for small children. Kalamaki is located in the southeast of the island, is a more secluded beach, but with fine golden sand.

The beach, on the southern area of the island, is close to the popular Laganas Beach (better for families with older teens and young adults) and is part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos.

This means that kids can be lucky enough to spot the protected sea turtles (Caretta-Caretta) that come to lay their eggs on this shore. Precisely for that reason, water sports are banned on this beach.

Tsampika Beach, Rhodes

Rhodes is a great island to visit with children and Tsambika is the perfect family beach too!  

Situated on the east coast of the island about 26 km from Rhodes Town, this large beach has fine golden sand, calm water, and a sandy seabed making it really suitable for families with young children. 

The facilities are really good with free parking right next to the beach. There are sunbeds and umbrellas available to rent, showers, and several beach taverns. 

For older children, there are various water sports such as parasailing and jet-skiing. Views of the beach are dominated by the Monastery of Tsambika which stands 240 meters high on a rocky bluff and is a place of pilgrimage.

Elia Beach, Mykonos

The atmosphere of Elia Beach is completely relaxing. Besides, the beach is wide enough to allow for different isolated areas. It has soft and fine golden sand and the shore is very shallow, ideal for small kids.

However, it must be said that maybe, not all families will feel 100% at ease since Elia Beach is a gay-friendly beach. I’ve visited with my kids and found it also truly family-friendly. 

Elia Beach is about 50 minutes from another great Mykonos Beach, Platys Gialos, by boat. To reach Elia Beach, you can catch the boat in Platys Gialos port as well as at the beach of Ornos, or you can jump on a bus in Mykonos Town.

This is one of the many southern beaches on Mykonos where naturism is allowed in some areas.

Beaches in Thassos

In no particular order, these are some of the best beaches that you will be able to discover and enjoy on Thassos island, take a good look and pick the one you prefer!

Paradise Beach 

One of the best beaches in Thasos is no other than Paradise Beach, between the low-key village of Kinira and the archaeological site of Alikes.

As the name suggests, the location and scenery are breathtaking. Imagine pine trees almost touching the water and surrounding the golden sand and shallow waters. Welcome to Paradise.

The view behind the beach is as spectacular as the one in front. After all, there is a small private islet less than a kilometer in front of the beach. If you are up for an adventure, rent a kayak and explore the islet or the coastline with the spectacular rock formations. Alternatively, relax on a sunbed and enjoy a drink or two in the two beach bars.

Golden Beach

A few kilometers north of Paradise, Golden Beach is a two-kilometer stretch of golden sand that surrounds the modern village of Skala Potamia. Throughout its length, you will find anything from traditional taverns and beach bars to high-end resorts and stores of any kind.

More than half of the beach is full of sunbeds and umbrellas. And still, it can get crowded. 

There are so many hotels and other accommodation options in Skala Potamia that the beach always seems full. And if you factor in the popularity of the area all over the island, you get an idea of why tourists and locals come here in huge numbers.

There is no better feeling than getting straight from the water to the restaurant just next to your sunbed.

Saliara Beach or Marble Beach

Not every Thassos beach has sand. Pebble beaches are a handy alternative for those who want to avoid moving sand to their cars and hotel rooms.

But, no matter your preference, when you are in Thassos, you have to visit Saliara Beach. It is one of the most unique beaches in northern Greece. All because of its small white pebbles that almost resemble large grains of sand.

Although it is a tiny beach that gets crowded fast, you can find anything in the beach bar. And next to the bar, you will find one of the modern marble excavation sites in Thassos.

The clarity of the water very much depends on the marble elements that find their way to the sea. The only downside is the challenging access to Marble Beach, as the dirt road there will leave your car white from marble. Yet, you won’t regret it a bit.

La Skala Beach

For a taste of luxury and comfort, make sure to spend an entire afternoon or day at La Scala Beach Resort.

A relatively new addition to Thassos attractions, La Skala promises king-like services and quality drinks. Choose the seat of your preference, and allow yourself the luxuries of a modern Greek beach bar.

And in case you feel any urge to get off the lazy mood, the bar organizes water sports and jet ski rentals.
Once you are done, head to the adjacent restaurant and taste some of the most delicious and gourmet meals you can have on the island, all without waking more than a few meters.

Of course, all these services come with a heavier toll on your wallet, but rest assured that La Skala is worth every penny.

Pachis Beach

A few kilometers west of La Skala, Pachis Beach is an ideal location for those that value exceptional services, clean water, and tasty food… This is one more of our favorite beaches in Thassos.

Although there are many luxury hotels and apartments in the area, the beach bars and restaurants keep pricing low and attract thousands of tourists daily for their quality drinks and meals. 

Your kids will love the sea in Pachis. The waters are crystal-clear, calm, and shallow, ideal for snorkeling and family activities. Or you can just lie down on a sunbed and let the children play where the waves touch the sand. At last, the relaxation and quality time you deserve. 

Arriba Beach

While in Greece, you may get sunburnt if you don’t pay attention or doze off for a bit while sunbathing. That is normal and part of the experience. But what if you want to avoid the sun altogether and still go to a beach. Thassos has you covered.

Arriba Beach in Skala Rachoni is the perfect spot for those looking for a shady beach.

The large pine trees will give you the impression you are in the middle of a forest. Yet, you stand on a sandy beach, and the beach bar is just behind you.

Read, listen to music, and enjoy the scenery. All in the natural shade of dense pine trees. You will love every part of it.

Skala Kallirachi Beach

If you are looking for a low-key beach with minimal organization, in the middle of a traditional fishing village, look no further than Skala Kallirachi.

The beach here is sandy and offers a great view of the nearby port with the many fishing boats coming and going. 

The water is clear and ideal for snorkeling, especially if you head southwards, where the sand gives way to pebbles and rich underwater life. Ideally, come here in the afternoon, relax at the beach, watch the sunset and then take a stroll at the biggest port on the island of Thassos.

This is an experience you do not want to miss.

Klisma Beach

Another off-the-beaten-path beach worth discovering is no other than Klisma Beach. This time, the small pebbles occupy most of the beach but give way to sand once you walk one or two meters into the water, at waist level. That is the reason locals prefer this beach over other nearby sandy alternatives. 

The water is crystal clear, the surrounding is magnificent, and the views breathtaking. Let alone that the sunset here is one of the best on the island.

And in case you get any hungry, there are two traditional restaurants just around the corner. Their reputation as quality tavernas precedes them, making them a must-stop in your Thassos itinerary.

Platanes Beach

Another supreme location for watching the sunset from a sandy beach is the traditional village of Skala Maries. There, Platanes Beach offers a great view of the Aegean.

The sunsets behind the Paggaio mountains on the mainland create breathtaking scenery you will long remember. 

Platanes beach has a bar that serves coffee, drinks, and fast food. But in case you prefer lying in bed, there is plenty of space to lay your towel and enjoy every moment at peace.

And if you have kids, there is another reason to be at Platanes as there you will find an organized water playground open to everyone.

Atspas Beach

On the other side of the seaside village of Maries, Atspas Beach is a small enclave of sand that leads to a narrow gulf.

Thanks to the mountains and trees surrounding the beach from either side, the waters are always calm and make for a great snorkeling experience.

Many yachts and tourist boats stop over in Atspas Beach to take in the views of this picturesque bay. You can also reach the beach by land, although you have to walk down almost a hundred steps to get to the area with sunbeds and umbrellas.

Yet, it is more than worth the effort. Don’t forget there is a beach bar here to cater to your every need.

Tripiti Beach

On the southern part of Thassos, Tripiti Beach is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. Its white sand and crystal clear water make Tripiti ideal for families and couples.

A large portion of the beach offers sunbed options from the nearby hotel and bars, while there is plenty of space left to play around. 

What you will love the most about Tripiti is no other than its spectacular cave. Imagine the water coming through an opening in the rocks and finding a way to a mini sandy beach.

You can even swim all the way and reach the main beach with all the sunbeds and facilities. It will be one of the best experiences you will have in Thassos.

Potos Beach

One of the busiest villages of Thassos, Potos is home to a vibrant and cosmopolitan beach that will amaze you with its beauty and liveliness.

The beach bars are packed next to each other and create an atmosphere that will remind you of the vibrant beaches in Mykonos or Santorini. 

The beach is almost always crowded and full of sunbeds. After all, the village of Potos is a major tourist destination thanks to the many hotels and apartments.

It is so organized that you will find anything on the beach. Think of massage sessions, bars to enjoy delicate cocktails or even the opportunity for an adrenaline rush with water sports activities. 

Psili Ammos Beach 

Not far from Potos, you will find one of the most beautiful beaches on the island: Psili Ammos Beach. Thassos is home to spectacular beaches, but none is as unique as Psili Ammos.

Standing in the middle of a tiny bay and overlooking the small islet of Panagia, the beach will leave you in awe of its beauty. 

Preferred by families and couples alike, Psili Ammos offers something for everyone.

The kids will enjoy the calm waters and sandy beach, while the youth will love the loud and upbeat music near the beach bar. The bar often organizes beach parties that start late in the afternoon and last until the early morning hours.

Aliki Beach

Right next to the archaeological site of Alikes, Aliki Beach is a quiet spot, ideal for families and couples seeking peace.

Although the water is a bit saltier than the other parts of the island, you will love swimming around and embracing the majestic scenery all around.

The best part of Aliki Beach is no other than the archeological site next door. The site starts when the beach ends and invites you for a short but entertaining walk. And when you return, make sure to dine in one of the many traditional taverns by the water on Aliki Beach.

General Information About Rhodes

Rhodes can prove a fantastic destination if you’re traveling with kids.

If you’re still uncertain about when to visit, keep in mind that the months between April and June, as well as September and October, are ideal as the temperatures are a little lower in these months.

The island’s capital, Rhodes Town, is stunning as it has numerous cobbled streets and is dominated by the medieval Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, one of the most beautiful castles in Greece.

The island’s bus service makes it easy to explore from all the resorts, and cars for hire are reasonably priced, too.

How to Get to Rhodes

Getting to Rhodes by plane: The most comfortable way to reach Rhodes is to land at the island’s international airport, Diagoras.

Flights arrive in Rhodes from the most important cities in Greece, including Athens (about 50 minutes) and Thessaloniki.

There are also several charter flights from European countries during summer, while several low-cost airlines fly to Rhodes from May to September.

Getting to Rhodes by ferry: Ferries from Port of Piraeus in Athens reach Rhodes weekly. It’s a long boat ride, from 18 to 20 hours, as most ferries stop at other islands in the Dodecanese region.

Ferries also leave from Sitia, in East Crete (stopping at the port of Karpathos) with a reduced frequency in summer (about three times per week).

Sifnos is an island rich in history and with a plethora of things to do. Known for its traditions, its gastronomy, and its whitewashed churches and monasteries perched on top of a uniquely rugged landscape, there is still more on the island to discover.

The beaches in Sifnos, often cataloged among the top shores in Greece, are arguably the main ingredient of any summer vacation on the island. Often overlooked and forgotten, the island is a great travel destination in any Greece itinerary.

Beaches in Sifnos, Greece

In no particular order, these are the beaches you should check out when spending time in Sifnos…

Vathi Beach

Sandy beach with shallow waters. There’s some organization and it’s possible to get there by boat too.

The quietness of the village of Vathi (also spelled Vathy) combines with the same relaxed atmosphere of its beach. Since cars do not have access to the area and are not allowed in the village, it’s still quite a tranquil place to spend the day by the sea.

Vathi is a sheltered harbor, as a matter of fact, until recent times, the only way to get there was by boat but now you can also do so by driving from the capital of the island, Apollonia.

If you’re traveling the island without a rental car, you can jump on a bus at the port of Kamares or in Apollonia, and reach Vathi within minutes.

The beach, which is more than one kilometer long, offers enough secluded spots if you’re into naturism. The place is ideal for families with kids as the sea is safe, protected from winds and waves, and very shallow.

On the beach, there are tavernas and traditional restaurants where it’s possible to have a great Sifnian meal any hour of the day.

While spending the day in Vathi, don’t forget to check the picturesque whitewashed Church of the Taxiarchis (the Archangel) located exactly where the boat from Kamares docks.

If you happen to be on the island in September, don’t miss the celebration to honor Archangel Gabriel.

Platys Gialos

Although not the best beach on the island, rather touristic and often crowded, Platys Gialos is a great choice if you want to spend a day at the beach in Sifnos and you’re staying in the nearby area.

The sand is golden under the sun’s rays and the waters are crystal clear. In the area, it’s possible to practice different water sports.

There’s a direct road that from Apollonia takes you directly there (about 10 minutes by car). If instead, you’re getting to Platys Gialos from Kamares, expect to drive for about 20 minutes.

Platys Gialos is a favorite beach among Greek holidaymakers who love the long line of tavernas by the beach serving delicious local food. the area is also known for an open-air theater located nearby.

From this beach, it’s possible to take different hiking trails that take you to Vathi and other settlements on the island.

Among the things to do in Platys Gialos, it’s a good idea to take some time out and walk for about 1.5 km to visit one of Sifnos’ best-preserved towers.

Known as the White Tower (Aspros Pyrgos), it is one of the over 70 fryktories or ancient beacon towers that you can bump into on the island. The White Tower dates from the 6th century BC and it’s 5.5 meters high.

Kamares

Popular and well-organized, sandy, quite safe, and with beautiful clear waters.

Kamares, the main port of Sifnos and the first place you’ll set foot on the island, is a pristine sandy bay, long and quite wide, with spectacular turquoise waters Kamares, and the nearby area of Agia Marina, is probably the most popular place to stay in Sifnos.

There is plenty of accommodation as well as restaurants, bars, and some night entertainment. All these reasons make the place quite crowded during most of the summer.

Since this is the most important coastal center on the island, you’re likely to find the beach quite overcrowded, so it’s always a good idea to head there quite early in the morning to find the perfect spot to spend the day.

Then Kamares is the perfect place to be at this hour of the day. Due to the orientation to the west, it’s in Kamares where you can get the best sunset pictures on Sifnos Island.

Faros Beach

Faros, which was Sifnos’ main port until 1887, is a gorgeous sheltered port with stunningly beautiful blue waters and a spacious sand beach.

The word faros in Greek stands for lighthouse. The beach receives its name after an ancient tower in the area.

The beach has certainly fans that get to the area every year and who consider it to be one of the best corners in Sifnos.

Clam and pristine waters, soft fine sand, tamarisk trees offering nature shelter, and a few tavernas on the waterfront make this place the utmost example of Greek summer.

If you also adore this settlement, you’ll be happy to learn that there are a few rooms and studios to let, as well as good vacation homes where you can spend your vacation.

Right next to Faros, no more than 3 minutes away on foot, you can discover the small Glyfo Beach featuring huge tamarisk trees offering natural shade for your stay.

From Glyfo, different paths start to reach the beaches of Apokoftou and Chrysopigi.

Fasolou Beach

Small, sandy beach with beautiful and calm waters.

Fasolou is located towards the east of Faros, it’s a tiny settlement with a picturesque beach well-protected from winds and waves.

At the end of the beach, there’s an imposing peninsula that hosts the picturesque white monastery of Timios Stavros. A hiking trail in the area leads directly to Kastro, the former capital of Sifnos.

Apokofto Beach (Chrisopigi Beach)

Paradisiac bay with a transparent sea, with both sand and pebbles. Parking is available and there are places to eat.

Also known as Chrisopigi Beach since it’s quite close also to Sifnos’ famous Chrisopigi Monastery, Apokofto beach is located est of Faros Beach.

If you reach the area from Faros on foot, you’ll be able to discover the magnificent hidden coves along the coastline.

Instead, those driving from Apollonia can marvel at the spectacular scenery that unfolds right in front of them. The ride is worth more than one stop if you love taking panoramic pictures.

The bay is not deep but awesome for snorkeling and features a mixture of sand and colorful pebbles that make the underwater experience quite unforgettable.

Although the beach is partially organized, you can easily find a shady spot under the many trees.

The beach is not crowded with allows for a relaxing experience. Most visitors to the area only focus on the magnificent monastery (they’re not to blame!) and ignore the spectacular beach of Apokofto.

If you also want to visit Chrisopigi, it’s located at the end of an imposing headland towards the south of the beach.

Several coves and unknown small pebble beaches populate the area, walk along the coast and discover them!

Herronisos

Small sandy beach, shallow, and crystal clear with some organization.

Located on the northern coast of Sifnos, Herronisos is about 15 km from Sifnos’ capital, Apollonia. The settlement is a tiny fishing village with just a few shops and places where you can rent a room.

Although many don’t consider this corner of the island worth a visit, I believe that the peace and quietness of the area are quite difficult to find anywhere else on Sifnos.

The beach is fairly small, sandy, and with a very familiar atmosphere.

If you’re exploring the area on a day trip from the more important villages of Kamares or Apollonia, it’s a good idea to set some hours aside and visit Vroulida Beach, just minutes by car from Herronisos.

Vroulidia

Among the least visited but most spectacular shores on Sifnos, Vroulidia can be a little hard to visit but it’s definitely worth the effort. The hike down to the beach is not as hard as the way up after a day of swimming!

The crystalline sea bathes an extensive bay of white small pebbles.

However, if you don’t really love walking on pebbles, or left your swimming shoes back home, two wooden piers will make it easier for you to get in the sea. It’s a relatively calm bay, but better avoided on windy days.

There are also two tavernas serving fresh fish, ideal for a quick lunch or cold drinks.

Panagia Poulati (Dialiskari Beach)

Wild and secluded beach, accessible via hiking path, no organized facilities, rocky bottom.

Located at the end of a lonely but quite brief hiking trail that starts near the village of Artemonas, this is a small beach, quite secluded (not everybody visits this part of the island), featuring amazing turquoise waters, with shallow but quite rocky bottom, which makes it an interesting place for snorkeling.

The small bay, surrounded by breathtaking cliffs that plunge into the sea, offers no organized structures nearby, therefore you will need to pack snacks and drinks for the day.

Overlooking the beach, you can visit the small church of Panagia Poulati, which gives name to the area and was built back in 1870.

This quintessential Cycladic church is the focal point of the landscape, featuring contrasting whitewashed walls, and a typical blue dome.

About Sifnos

Sifnos is a Greek island part of the group of the Cyclades, on the South Aegean. It’s surrounded by the islands of Kimolos, Serifos, Paros, and Antiparos and it’s about 75 nautical miles from the Port of Piraeus, on mainland Greece.

Not as big as other Greek islands, nor as tiny, the top sights and points of interest on Sifnos can be visited in 3 to 5 days. However, if you have more time or are keen on outdoor activities (Sifnos’ trails are stunning!), you’ll be able to discover more, and even check out many of its spectacular beaches.

As with many other islands in the Aegean, the rugged terrain is a fascinating part of the island’s landscape. In fact, on Sifnos there are four different mountain ranges and a few peaks to climb as well.

How to Get to Sifnos

There are no airports on Sifnos Island, so you need to travel by sea. Year-round ferries from the port of Piraeus connect Athens to Sifnos, and there is a more frequent service during summer, featuring both fast ferries and regular ferries. In summer, it’s also possible to reach Sifnos from the Port of Lavrio, close to Athens.

You can also travel to Sifnos from nearby islands such as Paros, Milos, Kimolos, Serifos, and Santorini among others.

This beach, shaped like a pear – which gives it its name, is between Vari and Megas Gialos in the southern part of Syros, about 8 km from Ermoupoli.

Azolimnos Beach

Another unmissable shore, only 5 minutes from the center of Ermoupoli, is Azolimnos. This small village features a family-friendly coast with fine sand and tranquil waters.

The beach is fully organized, although you won’t have any problem finding long traits of free coast to spread your beach towel and enjoy a day swimming or sunbathing.

Komito Beach
